The cheap ones you can get just tell you how strong a signal there is, no indication if you are pointing at the right dish or not.
I have a proffessional meter and would love to help you out, but unfortunately you are not local.

Saw last night in the 'Hornbach' mag that they will rent a satellite meter. Not sure the quality. The picture showed lots of LED's next to text showing the main satellite, so it will tell you which satellite you are pointing at, then 2 bars of leds for streangth and quality. Not sure if the leaflet is on the site (I can check). They wanted a deposit of something like 150chf and rental is 15chf a day (I think). Can confirm this tomorrow if not on site.

I have a dual satellite setup(single Universal LNB 0.5dB) with hotbird as main and astra 2 828.2) as secondary lnb. I get some channels from Eurobird1 for example, Travel channel at 11390 H 27500, also channels at 11222H, 11223V but not BBC or ITV or Film4 channels from Astra2. I tried rotating the LNB, and adjusting the elevation as well but that did not have a big impact.
Will a satellite meter help in acquiring a better signal ?

Maybe a better LNB would help to. i.e. an Invacom 0.3db or a Titanium 0.2db (although I read getting below 0.3db is almost impossible at normla temperatures). If you think you mihgt upgrade to a PVR in future then switching to a Twin would be a good reason to change the LNB.
Depending on you location, I might be able to help you out with a meter.

I am in desperate need of a satellite meter. I've just recently bought a SelfSat H30D4 from Media Mart and am having a nightmare trying to line the damn thing up. After 4 hours of twiddling, skewing and anything else I could think of (with a compass), I could not get a signal at all on my new SKY+HD...
Reading several threads on the net, I've come to the conclusion that a meter is the only thing that'll do the job, as apparently this dish is very very sensitive.
If anyone has a good quality one, that I could borrow for a few days, I would greatly appreciate it and of course I would compensate you with a nice bottle of vino.
I'm based in Zurich (close to Stadelhofen), but can meet you anywhere around the city one evening after work or lunchtime.
Thanks in advance,
APx

It took me about an hour the first time, and after that I usually find the signal within 10 minutes (the last time I had to do it before x-mas when the storm push my dish out of alignment). If I had to take more time, then something is not right, eg., cable connection, or not using the right menu in the system to tune, etc.

We checked the connections, cables, settings (referring to the manual), the works and still nothing! I even called after two hours a friend who has Sky and dish, and even he could figure it out! Apparently the Selfsat dishes are sensitive to the degree, hence the reason I want to check with a meter.
If all else fails, I'll take the snazzy looking thing back and get a regular one!

did you try to set it up at night?
sounds stupid, and I can't see why it makes any difference, but when I set our dish up I couldn't find a damn thing at night, tried again in the morning and picked it up straight away.
eta
I have a finder you can borrow, can meet up at HB or oerlikon

go to http://www.dishpointer.com/ select 28.2E astra from the drop down list enter your address and look where the dish should be pointing - choose a obvious landmark along the line and them aim for that to get you in the "range" then fine tune.
