Re: iPhone in Switzerland

First problems have been occuring with the iPhone only a few hours after it was released. It's an Activation Disaster! It might just be two isolated occurrences but still worth the read.

http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/edit..._act/index.php

EDIT: Seems like it is just a few phones that do not work properly. Many positive reports have been uploaded! Can't wait to play with one tommorrow

My source? Common sense. Apple is most definitely not going to announce a new version of the phone that has the one feature (3G capability) everyone thinks is lacking, a mere couple of days after the iPhone's introduction in the US.

Apart from that: Jobs recently (like two days ago or so) said in an interview that 3G capability is not an option right now because the 3G chips are too big and use up too much power and that Apple would re-evaluate that option in due time. And "due time" NOT meaning next Monday.

common sense?
Another industry analyst here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main...wiphone130.xml

The rational voice inside me says wait for the updated European version of the device, scheduled to come out by the end of the year, most likely partnered with Vodafone. It should have the 3G speed of Europe's faster networks and address some of the other shortcomings.
His common sense seems rather different to yours.

Immediately access to the web slows to a crawl - it's like travelling back to the early days of dial-up. Loading telegraph.co.uk took almost a minute. This is particularly troubling since the AT&T EDGE wireless speed is at least double that of the GPRS, the data network that the iPhone will have to use throughout Europe.
which says to me that people understand that the main selling points of this gadget will be "rubbish" over here because they're unuseable. WAP, anyone?

"most likely partnered with Vodafone"
"It should have the 3G speed"

hmm, "most likely", "should have" - sounds to me like he has absolutely no idea - or does this sound like definite answers to you?
I'm also convinced there'll be a 3G version someday - just not very likely anytime soon and most definitely not next Monday.

As for the main selling points: yep, that's my understanding, too.

Absolutely feel the same but now it has been launched the hype should go, reality will set in and people will look at it for it is an ipod that can do some basic phone functions and hardly a revolution or even the next iteration of phones.

Have fun and don't believe the hype

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

There are also a couple of IM programs out there for OSX and considering that this phone has OSX (or at least most bits of it) it should be able to run those programs. One of the better ones I have come across is Adium. You can have all your other IM accounts available on tabs. Works well.

I have had a SE P910, Nokia N80 and now use a Nokia E61 (company phones) and the strange thing is none of them is a complete package... sound familiar. The P910 came the closest.

I still want one but I think I have the patience to wait for all the teething problems to land in someone else's lap

basically as expected, Apple have seen the light regards European distribution of the iPhone ... in Switzerland, my bet is Swisscom with an exclusive for 6 months, followed with Phonehaus (Carphone) ditributing on Swisscom network. Note that networks have to be upgraded / altered to accomodate iPhone, so we are talking investment.
more interesting is going to be the response of handset vendors (Nokia) & large operators that don't get their mucky paws on a deal (Voda) ...
will try & update on the o2 situation as am seeing them early next week in Sluff ...

Edit : also note, the iPhone ill not be operating over 3G standard

A good link here:

Some real shortcomings there, though quite a few can be addressed with software updates.

On the other hand, Apple don't have a good record of software updates to give enhanced functionality on the iPod. They definitely prefer the user to buy a new device to get improved functionality, even though they could increase the functionality of older devices through software.

Apple did a good job with the screen and UI, but as an actual device it falls very short of what I would expect for the very hefty price. I'm still planning on getting a HTC Kaiser but I just saw that HTC have something else in the pipeline shortly that's a more direct competitor to the iPhone - but with 800x480 screen and a keyboard...

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

More iPhoniness :

Quote:

The iPhone's battery is apparently soldered on inside the device and cannot be swapped out by the owner like most other cell phones. Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Hakes said Thursday the company posted the battery replacement details on its Web site last Friday after the product went on sale.
Users would have to submit their iPhone to Apple for battery service. The service will cost users $79, plus $6.95 for shipping, and will take three business days. The procedure is similar to the one it has for the company's best-selling iPod players, but because some users will not want to live without their cell phones, Apple is also offering a loaner iPhone for $29 while the gadget is under repair.
now this is rip off city ...

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Hmmm... do I detect a bit of Apple-bashing?

I have had HP - Ipaqs, Nokia's, Sony Ericssons, iPods and the only time I ever took out a battery was to remove a sim card (in the phones) because the dilly buggars put them under the battery. Apple has an externally accessible sim card for those travellers who prefer to fly & land & change sims to pick up cheaper network coverage and not have to pay international thieving (sorry roaming) charges.

A bit more fwd thinking than the existing bunch don't you think

All I can say is my Nokia is only months away from the recycling station....

the battery life of the iPhone is circa 200-300 charges, as a business user, who loves all the wifi widgetry & the power eating that goes with it, this eans that at least twice a year I would have to send the handset back to Apple twice a year & pay for the benefit ?
the only time I ever remove the SIM is when I am changing handsets, but thats my profile of usage, note everybodys .....
