I cant really say as all I have seen is the adverts and the WWDC video.
What I can say though is that I have read about a Dutch guy that has installed a 16GB compact flash card in his iPod mini. It crashed (after abuse I am sure because my original iPod still works & its a 1st generation), he took it apart & found the hard-drive (the only moving component) has a Compact Flash fitting so he tried 4 Gb, then 8 Gb & finally there was mention of 16 Gb but I don't recall them saying 16 Gb was atually fitted. If you look at this site where they strip an iPhone, I don't see anything that looks like a CF fitting or a hard-drive. I am sure the iPhone has solid state memory rather than a mini hard-drive. This will help battery life as well as there is no hard-drive to spin-up. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone
Maybe someone a bit more techy can recognise a memory whip or two in the pictures.
Here are some more pics http://thinksecret.com/archives/ipho...rt/index2.html and I do not see any CF-type fittings either. It looks loke it is solid state mem soldered to the PC boards so you might have to wait for a 2nd Gen iPhone for more memory. If iPod is anything to go by, that wont be too long.

Nope there is no way a user of the device can extend the memory as there is no external memory expansion slot. Just like the issue with the battery, Apple don't want you to be able to expand the device they just want to you to buy the incremental updates. Eventually it might be useful as phone rather just than as an expensive ipod and iwifi internet sufing device.
Have fun

seems like the latest rumours suggest that it will only be released in the uk, france, and germany this year.
i just wish that apple had released the phone sim free and i would live without the visual voicemail.
becoming aware of the phone in early january and waiting a year of my life or more to get my hands on it, is becoming a little tiresome to me, and you all know im a big apple fan.
i wont be impressed if apple let the delivery dates in europe slip!

I had a Sony Ericsson P910. SE announced coming soon on their website for the replacement P990 (P910 donated to ex cause she loved the games).
I waited 18 months before I relented and bought a Nokia E61. SE had 'coming soon' on their web site for so long that it became a case of sour grapes. I don't want one. I have no curiosity as to how it works and I have moved on.
Now like you, I hope like you Apple can at least make it in less time otherwise they risk the same. Alienating the folk that watch their every new release with relish. I think they know they cant do it with the iPhone.

As expected, it has already been hacked down to the shell - expect a good response of custom apps http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/06/i...-shell-access/ |

| | | Re: iPhone in Switzerland Apple emasculates the iPhone | Quote: | | | | Alas, one of the iPhone's biggest shortcomings seems to have gone completely unnoticed by hackers, which means we're most likely stuck with it. That's a shame.
We're talking about the inability to manually manage music on an iPhone by connecting it to a computer, highlighting a band, album or song within iTunes and moving it to the iPhone icon. Apple, the company that practically invented the drag-and-drop, has consciously eliminated the feature from the iPhone. This decision effectively neuters the device because it removes capabilities that played a huge role in making the iPod the gee-whiz device that set the standard for portable music players | | | | | Full article ......
Now why have they done that then ? Shurely not to force people to download tracks over the net directly with their iPhone .....

I personally want seperate devices rather than an all in one .... also I am very cynical regards operators & handset vendors limiting the available feature sets in order to make money on other services ... Vodafone disarming the VoiP capability on the N95 & Apple practically forcing users to spend more money on iTunes being two recent examples ....

Actually, the Sony Ericcson S850 and the Nokia N95 are much better at being blended than the iphone.
I cant believe apple would release a phone to the general public with such unsophisticated blendable properties. Of course, all the apple fanboys will lap it up and buy it anyway, whatever the price.
Nokias have had third party blending apps since day one. come on apple! you can do better.

With bluetooth, it would make a lot more sense to have a small, dedicated phone and a seperate 'proper' PDA. You don't really want to have to lug a PDA everywhere with you (could be disastrous if you lose it on a night out) and phones should really be small (easily pocketable) and with a decent battery life. Something which can't be said of most smartphones.
However, the market has drifted inexorably towards the smartphone. There's pressure to integrate more functionality into it because the telephone is one device you're always going to carry with you. eg. I have a nice little compact digital camera but it only comes with me on special occasions. The rather less capable camera in my phone is with me all the time.
Of all companies, Nokia do a pretty good dedicated PDA - the N800. You should check that out. http://www.nseries.com/products/n800/
Linux based with a high-res screen, WiFi and bluetooth. It also has a decent Skype client. Plus it works very well with their folding keyboard, making a pretty good pairing.
I'm seriously considering one but am also tempted by the HTC Kaiser phone. It would be a great upgrade to my existing PocketPC PDA as well as having GPS which I think is a great feature when driving or visiting a new place.

Any suggestions on the iPhone vs. a Qtec? I was planning on purchasing the Qtec this fall ... for as much as I have tested and tried it out, I love it. But the iPhone looks awesome too! I am heading to Canada in two weeks and will have a chance to check it out there. Anyone have a Qtec? Pros and cons?
