I played with an HTC S710 today and was quite impressed. Nice long review here if anyone is interested: http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=3544
It's a decent size and I think it might tempt a few people who are considering the iPhone to take the plunge. Still no 3G but for me that's not really an issue. If I'm going to be doing any "serious surfing" I'll wait until there's an available wifi connection.

Like and iPhone
I expect that the HTC's are probably about the best out there, given that they make / made a lot of the Windows Mobile devices for so long for folks like HP etc.
You will have to decide what you want from the device. Wow-factor = iPhone (I think anyway), Sim-free = most anything else at this stage. My Nokia E61 has 3g, WiFi and GPRS so it pretty much does it all but it does have a relatively small screen. I have had HP iPaq's (never found one I liked), Nokia's (N80, E61), Sony Ericssons (P900, P910) all very good in their own way but all just different enough to have their very own pro's and cons. (Company was testing them and we ended up with the Nokia's while I preferred the Sony's because they had brilliant battery life - days & days vs days for Nokia and hours for the iPaqs)
I'd suggest you either wait & play with each one a bit or make a decision & lock yourself in.

And Apple have made the 'touch phone' aspect work better than other manufacturers. 'Windows Smartphones' have had touchscreens for ages but they really need you to use a stylus.
Unfortunately, there are some amazingly glaring omissions for a modern phone in the iPhone and as usual, Apple seem to be trying to exercise total control over the platform from hardware through service to software. At least MS based phones aren't tied to one manufacturer, any single service and allow developers full access to an API.
I'm seriously tempted by a 'small phone + Nokia N800' combo. But I'll probably go for a HTC Kaiser until such time as Nokia bring out the sucessor to the N800 - it's not quite there yet, but soooo close.

I Was really looking forward to the iphone and am one of those guys as you say that would buy it at any price. I am going to the US on a 182 (don´t want to pay war taxes) stay in NYC baby. I had a play with the iphone on a recent trip to the US.
It does all the things it shows and is pretty cool. Only thing I would say is that when it is demonstrated they show it at its best and for an hour it is. But like life it is a bit ´normal´ after a while.
Like having the web, and not using it to its full potential, like..waking hungover and needing juice or a cold drink desperately but not so much when you have it....like meeting your favourite football player and realising they re just human too.....
...or like having the whole resources of the web and only having 5 pages you look at on a daily basis...
I will still buy one, but I think its the wanting one that is the real deal...do just enjoy the wait as when you have it in your hand, unless you want to show off, and I imagine in Switzerland everyone will have one there will not be much chance, well just have it.
Or perhaps I am not just an IT guy like most of y´all (saw it in North Carolina) so just dont understand all of the technical stuff, just want the classiness. But still get one.
I think thats why I am so fond and of and, fit in with the Swiss...style over substance.

we have one for testing & one of our techies has played with it over the weekend. His take is that it certainly has wow factor, but after a couple of days he found the touch screen a pain ... also the navigation is a bit clumsy .. 8 clicks to find & dial a contact
Battery life is crap, especially if you hook to a WiFi AP ... that said, we are in the middle of negotiations with AT&T Wireless to provide some additional network intefaces ....

krlock3 | | | | | it's true that this hasn't descended into Fanboys Take On All-Comers that many forums would see - mainly because I think most are interested in the product and would like to have one if a) it wasn't so pricey b) did not have the flaws that it seems to have come to market with (albeit those seem not as bad as initially but see a) above )

krlock3 | | | | | I could probably buy Sunrise (note the capital S) for two months salary ..
As for PA, if you were female & willing to re-enact some scenes from Secretary, I might think about it ... I believe one of my female colleagues is on the loop for some help in that department ... should I pimp you in her direction ?? (been looking for an excuse to use that particular smiley for a long time ... thanks Kev) |
