Apple had this to say last night when it gave out its results.... "We are on track to begin selling the iPhone in Europe during the fourth calendar quarter of this year starting with a few major countries, and expanding the number of countries throughout 2008," Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said during a conference call with analysts following Apple's third- quarter report."
Im guessing fairly strongly that switzerland will be a throughout 2008 thing. how bad is that? lets wait more than a year, maybe even two, for a phone, shall we? arrrgh.

krlock3 | | | | | Yepp, definitely going to be 2008 for Switzerland. But to be honest - I don't care anymore. I went from being totally enthusiastic to being quite skeptical and now to "couldn't care less". Just ordered my Blackberry Curve :-)
Maybe, sometime in the distant future when the phone will actually be available here, will be vastly improved in terms of keyboard, connectivity and battery life and isn't tied to a single carrier anymore, I will go back to enthusiastic.

dakis

Hi,
Whilst in the US I have had the opportunity to play around with iphone. It seems like a fairly good pda and a poor phone. People were telling me that it is hard to hear people without headphones. It is fast and responsive and definitely has he Apple eye candy but people were also saying that it is actually faster to do many things with a windows mobile device.
It certainly has a wow factor and the displayed keyboard is a lot better than you might thing but not really a substiture for a real keyboard.
I would say if you are interested in at as a phone I would wait until Apple get that right.
Have fun

Martin | | | | | Hey Martin,
I'm not surprised you didn't get a good experience with the phone part of the iPhone. If you were visiting the part of the US you usually visit, the coverage that ATT has is horrible. I had both an old ATT phone, and then 'upgraded' it for a week to a phone that did both GSM and TDMA, after a week I went back to TDMA. The downfall of that version of ATT is a well publicized story. I also had a Cingular (who purchased the remnants of the old ATT wireless) SIM for a bit, but their service was even worse. I couldn't get a signal at all at my house.
T-mobile has the best coverage in the part of the US you generally visit for GSM, and Verizon has the best overall coverage in that same region. It would be interesting to see what it would be like on the networks here in Europe. I think US GSM networks are pretty pathetic, and I'd use Verizon if they had a decent pre-pay plan....

Sorry for coming into this conversation so late...
Anyway - I need a new phone and I am USELESS with phones (lose them, lock them etc etc) so want one I can send e-mails from etc so that I'm more likely to learn how to use them properly.... from what I can make out the 3 options are iphone, nokia e70 and a blackberry. Given I can't go into a shop here and compare the 3 should I go for a Nokia or blackberry rather than wait for the iphone - I have an Imac / Ipod but wouldn't buy the Imac again (looks nice but isn't comparable with anything) Is that basically what the iphone will be as well?

Hi,
you could also look at the HTC smartphones as well. They do a bit more than iphone and often have keyboards. However, don't have the flashy interface of the iphone but they also normally cheaper and most networks support them.
They don't have the "apple ethos" but they are a good business phone.
Have fun

I have to kick off with that I am an Apple nut so mine are compatible with almost everything you need (MS Office etc). Oh except for the viruses, they don't affect my Macs :-)
Next, the iPhone will sync with contacts and calendar using the iTunes sync and this works for both Mac and Windoze.. sorry Windows. There should be no problem with this.
Granted there are some HTC's, Blackberry's & Nokia's and others that will do mail and it depends on what you want. Usually the phones from Sony Ericsson, Nokia have battery lives that outlast the HTC's & Blackberry's. Again it depends on what you want. The iPhone though I love the design is probably going to me a bit like your Mac, works differently but if you get the hang of it you'll never go back..
Good luck.

Well I did play around with one in an ATT shop in the USA but I can't me seeing me owning one until a number of the current short comings are dealt with in version 2, 3 or 4 if ever.
By the way I noticed no one posted that Apple have already posted the first security patches for the iphone. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306173
Maybe that is what they meant by this phone being revolutionary. I think it is a first in terms of speed of needing a phone security patch. Has anyone had to patch their phone yet...from another manufacturer ? However, as phones become more and more a key business tool I would assume other manufacturers will get into the patching cycle.

Martin | | | | | Until recently, I had an old Nokia 6310i that was once positioned in the "entry level business phone" segment. It then turned out that like some other Bluetooth phones of its generation, it was vulnerable to some forms of Bluesnarfing. Bluesnarfing technics allow to detect phones that are in invisible mode, to copy stored data and to do more nasty things under certain conditions. The vulnerability wasn't exploited very much but people were toying around with Bluetooth devices in some creative ways.
The general public didn't know much about Bluetooth vulnerabilities and I as part of the minority couldn't just browse to the Nokia website and download a patch, but would have to go to a Swisscom shop and pay 5 Fr. to get the new firmware. (I decided to make sure Bluetooth is always deactivated on my phone instead.)

Hi,
I was not joking about the patching ability and it is not the only phone that allows over the air patching. I was laughing more at how quickly they had to patch phone.
Have fun

Martin | | | | | I've had Nokia phones (on T-mob and ATT), a Siemens phone (on ATT Wireless) and a Kyocera phone (on Verizon) that were automatically upgraded by the provider over air.

WM-based phones get ROM upgrades and radio upgrades. Mind you, many of them are for stability and battery life - I've not heard of many upgrades due to security holes.
With 3G surfing though mobile devices, this might become more prevalent.
