apple have every right to regulate their own support discussion forum.
at least they provide one. i dont know many other manufacturers that do this officially.

in addition, it might be that there are some limited technical problems eg the dead spots, on a very small scale with new technology like the iphone. this is fairly normal with new tech and everywhere it has been reported it has also been reported that apple are keen to take care of any problems promptly and efficiently. i see no reason for concern.

| | | Re: iPhone in Switzerland | Quote: | | | | | mate, how long has Steve Jobs been paying your wages .. | | | | | you and basellife are attacking it in every post. i am simply defending it. whats the big difference?
i am in no way associated with apple, except i own a couple of its products. I might very well say the opposite, some crass comment along the lines of "do you work for microsoft", but what would be the point of that???
regarding your comment about their forum, i just took a quick look at it, maybe you should too? there are several criticisms of the iphone mentioned, along with valid questions. I think apples policy is that they want a forum to be genuinely helpful for those who require support... not that the forum is simply a place to whinge. fair enough I say, although maybe you dont.
finally, i like your use of apples own 1984 advertisement to illustrate your argument.
now on the other hand, i have my criticisms too about the iphone... perhaps you should take the time to read some of my earlier posts. but on the whole, its simply a product that im excited about. nothing wrong with that.
why dont we simply agree to disagree? what do you think?

I am not really bashing the phone itself more the hype surrounding it. The actual phone delivered, has unsurprisingly not lived up to the hype that the fanboys in the media have been pushing.
For what it is worth, a lot of companies have support forums and most don't edit what the posters say. It is not that unusual in the industry. I think what was funny was that you are implying that some how Apple is a benevolent organisation that really wants to help all it's users at any cost. I don't think this is true as it is a commercial company with shareholders. It should be judged by the same standards as all other companies rather than having special coverage because it likes to portray it's self as the "david" against the goliaths in the industry.
I don't particularly have an opinion about the phone, apart from the fact that it is a reasonable pda, but a very closed proprietary environment compared to it's competitors.
Anyway, when it comes to phones the Symbian based phones are it's biggest competitors and as it is not aimed at business it does not really compete with the Blackberries or Window Mobile phones.
Maybe it might eventually be an interesting phone but I doubt Apple will do the things needed to get it there. However, it probably is really the next generation ipod.
Have fun
Martin

Also had a chat with one of my contacts at Orange Switzerland, the expectation is that this deal will roll cross border, please note, not officially confirmed.
Came across this via one of my contacts at Skype - iPhone supports Skype VoIP stack

Update on iPhone in Europe no real surprises. Word on the street is that the handset will be available in Switzerland in Q1 2008 & will support 3G / UMTS.

Some 17 year old kid has managed to unlock the Apple code so the phone can be used with other networks cards - which means it could be used out of the US right now - allegedly http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6963696.stm |

It probably won't make calls on T-Mobile either because they use CDMA2000 and non-standard frequencies.

ATT and T-mob use pretty much the same kind of GSM systems. When you roam on ATT you're usually on t-mob, and vice versa. In the USA GSM is on 850 and 1900 bands.

AT&T (Cingular) supports GSM 850 & 1900, although 1900 is pretty scarce on the ground, it will support 3G going forward.
T-Mobile USA supports GSM 1900, so the 850 EDGE will not be applicable.
The fact that hackers have been able to penetrate the OS, thus opening it up to new apps & also the recent SIM unlock has greater ramifications in Europe, where the market is more mature.
Many of the European carriers work on similar modes of GSM, as we are much more of a roaming community, when compared to the US. This means people will be able to free up the handset unless the chosen vendors & Apple manage to plug the gap.
Remember, Apple are in for 10% of all call & data revenues generated.... ... so it is in their interest to do so.

Remember ATT was bankrupt with a nearly-dead TDMA network and a GSM 1900 network with very spotty coverage. Since the buyout they've been upgrading to having some 850 coverage. But considering the FSM coverage in the US, you might be better off using the iPhone on T-mob's wifi network via starbucks shops...
I'm pretty sure I had some access to EDGE on t-mob last year with my tri-band. I'll know for sure at the end of the week though...

The new iPod has just been announced. It is the iPhone without the phone, and instead it has double the storage capacity. This is exactly what I asked for in the very first response to this thread, back in January: | Quote: | | | | | I'm hoping for the option of buying the iPhone without a phone contract. I just want the device as an iPod, photo viewer, and wiFi web browser - basically, everything but the cell phone (I have virtually no use for a cell phone). Unfortunately, I expect that I'll be out of luck. | | | | | |

It took a while for the Apple store to come up last night after the announcement and then it was dog slow, so i suspect they were raking in floods of orders from suckers like me.
Oh well, just 4 weeks to wait for my iPod Touch.
