Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Hi,

I love the Apple exchange rate 1.6 USD to the CHF so 299 USD is 469 CHF and 399 USD is 649 CHF where as it really should be 360 CHF and 480 CHF. The swiss prices seem a bit excessive. It is really difficult to get any real technical information from the Apple web site. Is this device still have limited music and video format support and is the platform still as closed as all other apple products ? Does something like skype work on device for example ? It looked quite interesting for a few minutes and then reality set in.

Also I assume the massive price cut on the iphone means it is not selling that well otherwise why cut the price so soon after it launched ?

Have fun

Martin

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

I've ordered an iPod Nano, since my music library is 7.5 GB an 8 GB flash player fits my needs well. The new Nano isn't bigger than the old one but looks a bit more clumsy, but hey, form follows function (video)

A part of the price difference can be explained by the fact that the American Store's prices don't include VAT which is 35 and 49 Fr. for the Touch in Switzerland. For the rest it's a widespread practise for big IT companies to charge different prices on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, TheRegister had a few interesting articles about this earlier this year, with a focus on Adobe which has a "UK tax" of up to 100 percent.

On the Touch specs, the gadget does what is on the tech specs list and presented in the detailed video demonstration, nothing more. I have yet to see a company who advertises their product with the features it doesn't have. Or do you think that Apple should explicitely tell you that the Touch doesn't do Skype, WMA files (they can be converted in iTunes though) and wax cylinders?

Personally I wouldn't buy a Touch, compared with the classic iPod it lacks storage space, and the touch-controlling gets "old" sooner if you only can handle photos and the cover flow feature with them. Also I just don't have enough money for an Apple gadget with a 3.5" screen.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Back to the iPhone. Heres a first look at the pricing plans to come, T-Mobile Germany.

3G & UMTS .... sounds good. €500 off contract sounds bad &

Further infos here : Gizmodo

(Note, is unconfirmed, but is thought to be a leak from T-Mobile marketing)

you will probably have ro reset via the vmail menu ? Congrats on getting your unit unlocked & over here.
Can you let us know how you unlocked it, as news reports say that although this has been done, it is not available as iPhone & AT&T are hitting the software hackers hard on this.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Looks like there's free iphone unlock software out in the ether now! Anyone who want to uses iphone in Switzerland can buy one from the US (I'm sure someone from ebay will oblige) and use it on Swisscom as some punters have successfully got it to work with the Swiss mobile telco. See here for further links http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=353612

See also Engadget at http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/11/i...ne-sim-unlock/

Enjoy your new iPhones! I know I'll be getting one

Unfortunately there is no workaround yet. SMS with "non-numeric" senders (as is the case with most provider originating SMS' and web form SMS') will not show up on the iPhone (at least not on an unlocked US version of it). The cause is not 100% clear yet, but I'd bet it has to do with AT&Ts visual voicemail feature. The way visual voicemail works is that it sends a "silent" notification to the iPhone, which then connects to the AT&T server and downloads the voicemail as a sound file (thus making it possible to listen to voicemails in any order and while offline). I believe this "silent" notification has the same "syntax" as our local provider notification SMS'. Hence, they do not get displayed.

Can't really blame them as the current version was never meant to be used on a non AT&T network. The European version will certainly not have this issue.

Hope this clarifies.

Alex

ATT's (Cingular's) network was almost 100% GSM 1900 until about two years ago. Remember ATT was bankrupt with a nearly-dead TDMA network and a GSM 1900 network with very spotty coverage. Since the buyout they've been upgrading to having some 850 coverage. But considering the FSM coverage in the US, you might be better off using the iPhone on T-mob's wifi network via starbucks shops...

I'm pretty sure I had some access to EDGE on t-mob last year with my tri-band. I'll know for sure at the end of the week though...
Okay, I'm back. My t-mob phone had EDGE on it pretty much the entire time I was in the Seattle area with a signal. There were a few times I only had GPRS, but it was rare to be without EDGE. I only have a tri-band phone, so that was on the 1900 band.

I thought it was interesting that there were still a large number of Cingular shops out there. I'm wondering how well ATT is doing if they haven't finished their rebranding at this point.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

I just bought myself an iPhone this week while on a business trip to the US. I have enough business there to justify signing up for an AT&T account, but a colleague managed to buy a chipped version (which will work with any SIM card in any country) in a regular New York electronics store for $25 more than the regular version.

I have to say that it's one of the coolest devices I've ever bought! It won't replace my dreaded Blackberry, as I need to be able to type long e-mails using a QWERTY keyboard, but as a phone / iPod / web browser etc it's absolutely great.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

just think what some of the marketing luddites pay for this kind of publicity... you have to hand it to Jobs & Apple, they have created a stir & i am almost 100% sure that once the little iphone hits the streets, we on this thread will all go have a look... and some of us will surely buy

maybe i should get myself some Apple shares

I'm hoping for the option of buying the iPhone without a phone contract. I just want the device as an iPod, photo viewer, and wiFi web browser - basically, everything but the cell phone (I have virtually no use for a cell phone). Unfortunately, I expect that I'll be out of luck.

Yeah, I know that there are somewhat similar products out there that do these things without being a phone, but none appear to be nearly as good as Apple's (although I obviously need to see someone other than Steve Jobs using it before passing final judgment on that).
Why bother with the phone, then? You can get everything you want right now - check http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/guidedtour/ - cheers, Rock

I completely agree, but maybe you should have looked to see whether I had posted anything since my comment that you quoted from January. Here is my most recent response (on page 8 of this thread in my browser):

The new iPod has just been announced. It is the iPhone without the phone, and instead it has double the storage capacity. This is exactly what I asked for in the very first response to this thread, back in January:

activate and unlock 1.1.1 iphones.. from the iphone..

I have been on the iphone since september, but been dreading the update to 1.1.1 cause the bricking problems (that have been sorted out now..)

However it's NEVER been this easy to jailbreak an unactivated FW1.1.1 iphone as now..

all you have to do is to access safari as per instructions ( http://www.jailbreakme.com/safari.html ).

it will take you to

http://www.jailbreakme.com/

After that you can use it and install 3rd party goodness right onto the phone..

And AnySim's latest version unlocks it aswell.

For ipod touch this is also an easy way to allow 3rd party apps.. and has been tested.

nerdy wicked.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

If I buy an iphone now in the US, will I later be able to add a Swiss SIM card and use it here?

I need a PDA and don't want to buy the itouch if the iphone will eventually be launched here. I also don't want to spend the money if it's not going to work here at some point.

Any info?
