If I buy an iphone now in the US, will I later be able to add a Swiss SIM card and use it here?
I need a PDA and don't want to buy the itouch if the iphone will eventually be launched here. I also don't want to spend the money if it's not going to work here at some point.
Any info?
It would be easier, though probably much more expensive to buy an unlocked iPhone in France. Then you know it'd work for sure.
You also wouldn't have to worry about all of the issues with trying to unlock and then having the phone bricked by a later software update.
I don't mind waiting for the phone feature. I guess what I don't understand is if it is hardware or software that will need to be changed in order to use the iphone when Swisscom (or whoever) launches it here.
Does anyone already have the iphone and plan on using it with Swisscom when the service becomes available?
just think what some of the marketing luddites pay for this kind of publicity... you have to hand it to Jobs & Apple, they have created a stir & i am almost 100% sure that once the little iphone hits the streets, we on this thread will all go have a look... and some of us will surely buy
02 UK plan to ship 1M units by end of Q1 2008, Jobs has been quoted as saying total shipments of 10M by year end 2007 .... I'll let you do your own arithmetic.
(A little off topic, but Apple related nontheless, 2 Million copies of Leopard shipped over the opening weekend ... clever Apple)
I sat next to some bloke with his iPhone on the train last week. He was doing his best to distract me from viewing a movie on my 160Gb Classic by constantly taking his phone out of his pocket and scrolling through his contacts.
I'm sure he'd have been watching a movie too, if he had confidence in his battery lasting
I was in London on Friday and got dragged kicking & screaming to my brothers local O2 store so that he could buy one.
Once... and I mean only on one occasion that I managed to drag it from his hands, he gave me the classic sad Beagle look and I got a chance to have a short look. I want one. I don't care what anyone says about battery life. I don't care how many of you Windoze supporters there are out there. I want one.
And by the way, he got it home Friday night, filled it up with goodies (video, music and synced with his mail etc). The battery lasted all through to Sunday night when I was leaving with still about a quarter of the charge and he was playing with it all the time. Checking the WiFi access everywhere, checking Google Maps, checking the browser etc.
I want one Swisscom.... I think I am moving countries. The prohibition of late showers, the recycling visits to the tip on Saturdays, everything closed when I need milk, and now the final straw. I suppose I shall vote with my feet and go... buy an iPhone
This user would like to thank for this useful post:
[deleted information about unlocking iPhone. We're not an unlocking forum, and that info can be found elsewhere].
i don't actually use it as a phone. it's more an ipod touch with a camera.. i use my sony ericsson k800i for calls, and use the iphone as a backup (always keep a paperclip in your wallet.. ;-) ).
how do i motivate that? well, i play with the thing too often right now, so i run out of batteries and i still need my phone, just more practical for now.
for people worrying about dropping it, get an incase iphone rubber case. dropped mine 3 times, on wood floor, asphalt and concrete (it happens to me..), phone's working fine.

Reason: removed unlocking instructions.
Surely there must be a law in Switzerland prohibiting people from using unlocked iPhones There might even be a dodgy little clause in your mobile contract that says something like that.
Beware, they will find you and export you and your foreign iPhone - you are not allowed to buck the system here didn't you know that? This is exactly the type of social/moral slip in standards that will result in everyone drinking absynthe (or taking some other banned substance) that might lead to people having fun and that is no good. Retract your advice quick before they get onto you
Well, been using an iPhone here since September and I totally love it. Most people that see it go like: ... I want one! ...
What I found remarkable was that recently during a break at the cinema I saw several blackberrys come out but also several iPhones. What are the chances? There are so many people already with these phones ...
Just as a side note: from what I understand all the new iphones currently shipping are un-unlockable for the time being. So beware if you are planning on unlocking a recently bought iPhone.
Apple officiallyconfirmed today that the iphone will be sold through Orange in France from Nov 29th... maybe we should expect an announcement regarding the swiss iphone soon?
Went in to Swisscom yesterday. I managed to surprise the girl who was standing in an empty shop staring at the TV, she didn't even have time to pretend to be doing anything else when I asked her about the iPhone, although she did try.
In her most surly attitude, reserved no doubt for those that interrupt her while she's doing sod all, she informed me that there was no information from Swisscom about when the iPhone would be available or even if they would be selling it.
I can't find any information on their web site either.

Does anybody have any insider knowledge?
Apparently Orange will have the exclusive network rights in Switzerland, as an extension of the Orange France agreement. Not sure if Phonehaus (Carphone Warehouse) will operate on a similar deal as with 02 in the UK.
source Orange CH ... from a meeting a few months ago.

I found my (and I purchased it) iPhone "Killer" on Saturday in mediaMarkt.
An LG "viewty". Has all/most the functions of the iphone, plus it can do videos, send MMS, 5 MegaPix camera with flash, can install own software and this was all with out hacking . It also can do 3G.
I'm sure the iPhone will be huge when it arrives next year, til then, very happy with my "iPhone killer"
I won't translate the whole thing, but to make it short: the iPhone is now available for purchase in T-Mobile stores all over Germany without SIM-Lock. It can be activated through iTunes. The price tag will deter all but the most desperate iPhone-o-philes: 999 Euro without contract and lock.
This, thus, verifies the rumors about the iPhone's costing 999 Euro in France without a contract.
It is as a result of Vodafone successfully challenging the legality of the sim-lock in the German market. See this for more.
The French oblige mobile operators to offer sim-free phones already, it looks like this German judgement will do the same in Germany - note that T-Mobile have appealed...

Yeah, I know that - the insane part was referring to the price tag.
Apple deliberately prices the phone that high so nobody will buy it. Unfortunately, this, again, could cause all kinds of law suits.
