Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Ohhhh, sorry!

The price of replacement phones is a shocker anyway - I was quoted £599 to replace my phone last summer so I bought one on ebay for a fraction of that...

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Just out of curiosity for all those who have an iPhone, has anyone got a bill for one yet?

I am curious after being in New York and watching a program about people complaining about iPhones being the biggest mistake they every made... Apparently, and I don't have one, the thing is online the whole time and unless it is online it is pretty well a normal phone. If it is online while you are roaming then the costs are big - there were two guys on there who had been on holiday abroad for two weeks and had bills of $5K and $6K when they came home...
Anyone being travelling with one of the things yet?

well, those high phone bills aren't the iPhones fault. First of all: data transfers can easily be disabled on the iPhone. Either disable the automatic e-mail checking system or delete the APN string in your EDGE settings.

People obviously can't read - data roaming is extremely expensive and the AT&T websites clearly declares the prices for roaming. Everybody in Europe knows that. But obviously, some people in the US have never traveled abroad with their cellphones and expect data prices to be included when they roam.

So no, this really isn't an issue - if you don't use your iphone for data transfers while you're abroad, you aren't charged for them, either.

I'll agree and disagree with you there.
The design of the iPhone is based on having a flat rate data contract. If you can't have that then it is "disabled".

And its about time that someone started looking at roaming charges for calls and data. I was recently abroad and had to ring China for 10 minutes. The cost was Chf 60 which is to say the least ridiculous. If you are data roaming I can easily see you hitting mega bucks figures.

I don't suppose the iPhone is clever enough to say you are roaming buddy and its going to hit your wallet - so how many people are going to simply forget; till they get their bill of course

I also think data roaming charges are insane. But again - everybody knows that and if you keep data turned on while you're abroad, it's not the iPhones fault. Other mobile phones also check for your e-mails on a regular basis if you configure them to do so, resulting in the same problem.

Blackberrys are a bit smarter here - you can configure them to disable data as soon as you roam.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Hi Pat,

that looks like a great phone. I have the HTC Kaiser with the slide out keyboard and tiltable screen, Highspeed internet connection is great over HPSDA and 3G. However, even though I don't thin apple iphone is that useful as a phone I do now an ipod touch which I use for web browsing. It is first Apple product which I have actually thought is more substance than style and there are no contract charges and there are a lot of wifi hotspots. I also found that that the touch keyboard it really only useful for typing short things such as urls. I am a lot faster and more accurate using the slide out keyboard on the HTC phone.

Apple might get it right by the 2nd or 3rd generation phone but they are still being beaten on specs and performance by existing phones.

Personally I would definitely suggest the ipod touch over the phone, it is certainly a damn sight cheaper(though still over priced in Switzerland) and there are ways of getting the missing apps running on the device...I am not really using much of the ipod functionality..the sound quality is worse than my existing mp3 player and I am not a great fan of itunes or the store. Also the lack of volume buttons is a pain...why should I have to look at the device.

Have fun

Martin

The last I had read in the local press, was a rumoured March, and far from confirmed.

Follow the rumour-mill and it might be May based on the market needing this: http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipod-itune...S&NewsID=19714

It is confirmed by Telefonica. They say they will wait because (as many said correctly in this thread) for the customers, switching from the 3G phones that are in the market right now to the Iphone 2G would be like a drawback. Probably we will have this 3G too, I don´t know.

"It is confirmed by Telefonica" edited: correct is "It is confirmed by Movistar".

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

According to this link, Swisscom's getting the contract. There's also a small competition to win one of five.

Edit: Warning! Do not enter the competition on help.ch. We are being bombarded with spam.. I know, it's our own fault - just wanted to warn whoever wants to go for the slight chance of winning an iphone...

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Swisscom will offer it from Feb 22nd 2008.

No thats wrong, orange has an exclusive contract in Q1 next year.

Wait, its actually Sunrise who are purported to be close to a final deal.

All this stupid speculation is purely that at this stage... Speculation.

WAIT! Hold the presses!!! I personally am in talks with apple and will be bringing the Iphone to market here exclusively sometime in the next 3 months.

You heard it here first folks...

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Should I get an IPhone from the states for Christmas since its cheaper and just unlock it? Or is it better to wait and buy a "legal" version from SwissCom after February?

Are there any features that you can't use if you have an unlocked IPhone working on the SwissCom network?

Someone mentioned buying a "chipped" iphone in NYC. This sounds like a gimmick. Why wouldnt you be able to use any GSM card from any country in one? Its a GSM phone afterall. Did you mean to say unlocked?

I'm currently a SwissCom subscriber with a regular GSM phone. How much extra per month does the high speed data rate cost when you stream video / youtube / etc?

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

3 weeks ago I asked a colleague travelling to New York to buy me an iPhone. Which he did (worked out at 480 CHf). The phone had the 1.1.1 firmware.
That evening I was able to hack and unlock the iPhone using the instruction on www.hacktheiphone.com.
I am now using it with my Orange SIM. I am an Ultima contract which means I have a data plan already with a fixed tarrif. I am getting the same sized bills as I was with my Nokia which had push emails enabled.

I was however lucky, because that week Apple released firmware version 1.1.2 to coincide with the launch of the iPhone in the UK and Germany. 1.1.2 has all the international features such as language and keyboard layouts.
I haven't tried upgrading to 1.1.2 yet as it is not as straight forward as it was for 1.1.1.
Also, newer phones that come with 1.1.2 pre-installed have a new bootloader that has yet to be hacked. This means that if you buy an iphone in the States now, it is uncertain that you will be able to unlock it.

That said, I love my iPhone, the interface is just superb and I was a sceptic at first. There are some short comings, like no MMS support. Bu chatting with SMS is just a pleasure now, even with the touch screen keyboard. It's also a bird puller :-) Whip the iPhone out in any bar in Zurich at the moment and you get attention.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

If only EDGE weren't so darn slow and the keyboard were better :-(
Neither was a problem for me in the beginning but after 2 months of usage I traded mine for an HTC TyTN 2. The keyboard SUCKS. and EDGE really is slower than heck. I guess those people who claim EDGE is adequately fast have a Dial-Up connection at home.
