There is a little secret to making it go just a little quicker. Make your home page www.google.com or .ch or whatever. Then go there and scroll down to preferences, select and then choose the option to format pages for your phone.
Once done it means that your phone uses the google portal as a kind of proxy-server and will render things pretty quickly even on EDGE. If you want to see the page in all it's xml or html glory there will always be the option at the bottom of the page.
It works for most phones btw. Once done, my brothers iPhone renders actually slightly quicker than mine does even using 3G but this of course will depend on the network.

you can go to Germany or France and buy unlocked iPhones. It's just no provider is selling them here yet.
You might be mad to get one today as you might miss out on the 3G+ version |

Swisscom will most likely be the carrier of choice for Switzerland but there is no official statement to this fact yet. Also, next month is MacWorld in the US where Apple is expected to make some announcements regarding the next generation of the iPhone, expected to be 3G compliance.
I agree with you that this sucks but it is better to wait. Another exciting milestone will be the release of the SDK for the iPhone in February, which will mean that there will surely be issues of compatibility resolved for Enterprise level services such as MS Exchange and Push Synchronisation.
Anyway, my advise, just be a little more patient and wait.

It would be interesting to find out if this is, indeed, the case. If the phone doesn't work with all other cards, it would be a locked phone, not meeting the requirements of French law.

etc. etc. - google is your friend.
I know for a fact that the iPhones sold in France don't work on the Swisscom network (and many other networks across the world).
There are ways to fix this issue but they all involve hacking the phone - which voids the warranty. And if you're going to hack your iPhone, you can just as well buy a much cheaper US-version.

Interesting. Though I suppose French customers who want to buy an unlocked phone and work in Geneva or Basel would expect to have it be able to work with the Swiss providers. Then again, I could pick up a SFR signal at my place when I lived in Muttenz, so perhaps they'll say that the French providers' coverage is good enough.

really sucks. | | | | | Why? It has a 3.5" screen and doesn't even support MMS with photos. The next generation will come with no doubt and probably fit European needs much better. Cheer up and be thankful that we're not the guinea pigs. |

i dont give a s*** about mms. what i would like is a device that seamlessly and very easily syncs with my mac, and can be used as a phone and music player. in other words, the iphone is great for me. if the iphone isnt right for you or others, eg comments likt "oh my htc touch syncs brilliantly with my pc" then great for you but not for me, because i know what i want, i know what will work for me and that is the iphone.
what sucks is that it is taking so long to officially get here. 1 year since announcement is taking the piss, and still no official confirmation. when i listened to the january macworld expo, i kind of assumed that this nice new device would be in my hands this year! and no, i dont want to buy an unlocked one.

well, i was thinking about buying an ipod right as apple announced the release of the iphone. so i wanted to buy one but i have changed my mind. the prob is, that i would have to carry around a large brick/gadget in my pocket. i always carry my cellphone in my jeans pocket and this one, as light and thin it is...has the wrong measurements for me. for the ipod in can choose if i feel like taking it with me, but the phone i need to have with me, always.
but in general, ist an fantastic product for many reasons....

Hey krlock3, sorry - I just wanted to point out the bright side of the delay, I'm a satisfied Mac user myself and closely monitor Apple's moves...
And because of this I have to say that this delay isn't a complete surprise to me. First come the US, then the big European markets (and Japan/Canada) and then the rest. It's the same pattern like for the iTunes Music Store. In a few years, when somebody inside Apple proposes to open a flagship store in good old Switzerland, they'll notice that there has been an AppleStore look-alike from DataQuest in downtown Zurich for a decade.
Similar companies probably act in the same way but it takes some time to get used to it for us Apple fans I guess. | | This user would like to thank Nathu for this useful post: | |

i wasnt having a pop at you at all! just venting my spleen, whatever the hell that means, and standing on my vitual soapbox.
until the iphone, apple had a beautiful habit of announcing a product in a presentation, and then you could immediately buy it on their website after the presentation ended. something i loved! this trend towards announcing products way before they can get into my hands, is a trend i do not much like!
i have stayed out of this thread for a good while because im just tired of it all, but now and again i have to vent, as i said.

The last I heard was that Swisscom is planning to introduce the iphone with sim-lock of 2yrs. Ofcourse, there are ways of getting it unlocked but here is another incident I had heard of. A guy got an iphone, got it unlocked and then ran an upgrade from the apple website. And guess wat, the phone stops working. They(apple) had some means of finding out if the phone was locked or not |

i read the other day that they call it "brick modus". an "illegal" unlocked phone cant be updated. if one is doing so, the phone freezes to a brick and only a specialist can make it work again.
in germany t-mobile lost on court versus vodafon to be the prime reseller and to force customers to such tough contracts. now vodafon seems to be able to sell the phone without contracts, but it will take about 900€ to get one.

Hi Guys,
I have had my iphone for two months now. Bought it in Germany, unlocked, imported from The States. It's the best phone I've ever had. So easy to use. I'm am so impressed that I went out and bought an imac computer and love it. To hell with complicated windows system. I am very much computer literate, but mac just makes it so easy and a pleasure to work with.
iphone DOES work it Switzerland. It doesn't have MMS which I never use anyway. Wifi is fast and streams like a desktop. Can't connect to GPRS cause it's programmed for EDGE which is a pleasure, with my Nokia I kept on connecting without knowing it and it cost me a fortune.
Can transfer data between mac and iphone with a touch of a button. WARNING. do not update your iphone. It will lock.

Nobody is claiming that hacked iPhones from the US don't work in Switzerland. Only the unlocked ones from France and Germany don't work. Paradox - but that's the way it is.
Don't follow you on the GPRS thing, though - GPRS works perfectly on hacked iPhones. EDGE is an interation of GPRS, btw. and is fully compatible with older GPRS networks that don't offer class 10.
