macworld expo is next week, supreme being Jobs is speaking on tuesday.

best case scenario, he releases iphone version II and says it is available in switzerland immediately.... hehe, somehow i dont think so. rediculous that a year after announcement, it still isnt here.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

In my eyes, the iPhone is nothing more than a toy. I was extremely enthused about mine in the beginning but lost interest very quickly. I'm now using a Blackberry Curve again and the iPhone sits on my night-stand to be used as an iPod. I like the iPhone's great screen. Using it is easy and fun but also very limited. Doesn't have cut and past, for example, keyboard use is inconsistent, PIM functions are a joke (plays the alarm sound ONCE for a calendar alarm, for example. Unable to repeat alarm sounds etc. - WTF?), the keyboard only works if you type in English or High German, Swiss German, for obvious reasons, isn't supported - which isn't a problem with normal phones but the iPhone's touch-keyboard highly relies on the auto-correction.

Push-mail doesn't work, no support for e-mail aliases even on .Mac, Safari frequently crashes, no flash, which makes navigating 70% of the websites a pain or simply impossible.
The choice of software, even when your phone is locked, is a joke. Most of the apps are hacks, nothing works well.

I could go on for hours here - my point is: I don't like it. Perhaps things improve once the SDK is out.

not so ridiculous when you look at the conditions under which Orange France, T-Mobile etc. have to offer it. I think it's very fortunate that the Swiss providers obviously don't want to be dictated by Apple.

14% share of data revenues no less .... followed by RiM with 10% ....

although RiM only extract urine on traffic via their servers, not for all connections.

10% for RIM? didn't know that - I thought they got flat-rates for each customer.

Anway, RIM doesn't cash in on voice, which makes that less evil in my eyes. And there's another substantial difference: RIM is a service provider. They make money on that service. Apple doesn't provide any service whatsoever and still cashes in substantially - that's the real issue here.

Also - on the Blackberry push-mail actually works :-)

I have had my iphone for two months now. Bought it in Germany, unlocked, imported from The States. It's the best phone I've ever had. So easy to use. I'm am so impressed that I went out and bought an imac computer and love it. To hell with complicated windows system. I am very much computer literate, but mac just makes it so easy and a pleasure to work with.
iphone DOES work it Switzerland. It doesn't have MMS which I never use anyway. Wifi is fast and streams like a desktop. Can't connect to GPRS cause it's programmed for EDGE which is a pleasure, with my Nokia I kept on connecting without knowing it and it cost me a fortune.
Can transfer data between mac and iphone with a touch of a button. WARNING. do not update your iphone. It will lock.
Stephen120, you're the first case of an iPhone "halo effect" I witness. Although I'm sceptical of the iPhone in its first generation, the iMacs are cool computers to work with and I hope it will be a good experience for you, too.

In case of keyboard layout problems on the Mac, just search the forum for answers.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

i have the ipod touch and safari works perfectly fine.

i also have no problems with the keyboard... i like using it personally, but can see how it might be more problematic if you arent very accurate or have big fingers.

i dont see why i need cut and paste on my phone.

i think the iphone targeted web apps are great. its not true that most of the apps are hacks. just have a look on the apple website for iphone web apps... there are hundreds. here is a link....

http://www.apple.com/webapps/

i suppose everyone thinks differently.

just get one in France - will be much cheaper than one with a 2-year 90fr/month Swisscom contract. The Euro is diving right now...

Can't use it on the Swisscom network (this might change with the 1.1.3 release, though) but who cares - Sunrise is cheaper and also has EDGE. Coverage is the same if you live and work in an urban area.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Time Capsule is a well thought out product, coupled with the new Air laptop, I could be tempted ....

did I just write that ???

On the iPhone, only 4M units shifted, don't think thats going to have either Blackberry or Nokia shaking in their boots ...

thats better ... back to normal Kev ...

Time Capsule is actually pretty cool, and surprisingly, they let you add disk via the USB port.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Hey Guys and Gals,
I will be moving to Switzerland in the next few months. I'm currently located in Germany and have an iPhone, a German T-Mobile one. Now After some negotiations with T-mobile, they have unlocked the phone for use with a sim card from any country. I do realise that some here may not believe this, but T-Mobile is obliged to unlock all phones at the end of their contract period. As I will be moving to another country, my contract was to be voided..... Anyway, the end result is that T-Mobile has unlocked my phone.

Now to my question to you, which Swiss Mobile Carrier and plan would be appropriate for use with the iPhone? Obviously I will need EDGE and GPRS access, the more data or a flat rate on data would be best. As for minutes and talk time, I would be happy with 500-1000 min.

So any advice you may have, would be very much appreciated.

apple tv updates. rubbish. hardly likely to convince the majority to stop illegal downloads in this day and age.

alright, I'm someone who comes from the film industry (admin side), and who was absolutely against downloading/streaming pirated films & tv series.

BUT, I found out that it was almost impossible to PAY to watch a film when and where you wanted to.

- LoveFilm only works with PC (and I am a fervent Mac user, my MacBook Pro I cherish!)

- Amazon only works in the States, or if you happen to have kept your American credit card and address (Not the case...)

- itunes doesn't have much yet on offer in Europe.

- so the only other option is Torrents. (coz you have to admit that anything that's streamed from pirated live sessions just looks and sounds crap - as the Scot guy says in Britain: "it's the Experrience that coonts".

I will admit to having downloaded a few series, and a few oldies. But if it was available to pay for with what I have (Mac, itunes, a few cables and a wonderful surround sound system, and I'm hoping in a while to add the HD flat screen, have to keep working for that though)

So as soon as the iTV comes out, and iTunes manages the copyright issues with the studios (and the screenwriters' guild) to expand to Europe, I'm in! It is the future of television, and no more crappy commercials every 10 minutes.

That is because you do not have 3G on your iPhone... there is a difference in coverage I can assure you.

I stick to my P1, I need a good keyboard to text and I enjoy push email...

IMPO the Swisscom Plans fit the best to the iPhone, try the following link

Did you updated your unlocked iPhone with the January 2008 update? If yes could you share some comments?

Best Regards

Well I live in the city (Zurich) and have a great connection everywhere except in my apartment... The problem is that the buildings here are often build with reinforced concrete and the steel in my walls keep me from using my phone or 3G data card from home a lot...
