Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Hi,

There's an interesting article on The Register about this whole iPhone story:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01...ocked_iphones/

There are some interesting points about the mobile provider lock-ins - especially the notion that when you buy a BMW, they don't force you to buy petrol from one particular garage; nor do the manufacturers of fridges dictate to you which electricity company you have to buy power from.

I always thought that Mac fans were the type of people who are opposed to the alleged anti-competitive tactics of Microsoft - but Apple are just as bad by all accounts.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

much as i'm opposed to lock-ins, that's a really poor analogy. the price of the bmw is not heavily subsidised by the fuel companies.

I think no-one's answering because we have already discussed this on this forum, so I suggest you do a search. Basically, no-one knows definitively when/if the iphone will be offered by a swiss company.

Add to that the fact that nobody actually cares.

Cheers,

10% for RIM? didn't know that - I thought they got flat-rates for each customer.

Anyway, RIM doesn't cash in on voice, which makes that less evil in my eyes. And there's another substantial difference: RIM is a service provider. They make money on that service. Apple doesn't provide any service whatsoever and still cashes in substantially - that's the real issue here.

Also - on the Blackberry push-mail actually works :-)

am sure this will make Apple shareholders happy .... not

For example, Sacconaghi said, if Apple hit its sales goal of 10 million iPhones by the end of fiscal 2008 but 30 percent of those don't result in any carrier payments, its revenue and profit would be $500 million and 37 cents per share lower than expected.

O2 cuts tariffs for the iPhone in UK

They're quoted as saying the iPhone is their fasting selling device - I wonder why they're cutting the costs then...

for some of us, it actually gets quite close to theology.

To a certain extent (especially cutting price of phone in US) you could argue this is market segmentation. By now the ubergeeks have all unloaded their wallets and they want to target the next ones down the food chain. However the retroactive price reduction is a little strange. Maybe something to do with people using them in a way that isn't optimal for O2 profits?

Not me - I'm not an Apple fanboy and have never owned anything from them. I was just pointing out an obvious fallacy.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

So according the following sources the iPhone will be released with Swisscom as a carrier late February:

(in English): http://www.macworld.co.uk/ipod-itune...m?newsid=20319

(in French): http://www.letemps.ch/template/econo...article=224399

The French article makes a point that Swisscom would not want to offer the current version of the iPhone and speculates if Apple would release a new model before the end of February.

Pure speculation. Le Temps picked up a very old and unsubstantiated rumor that was posted a couple of months ago in some forum and later used as the basis for an article in some economics magazine. Swisscom has repeatedly denied that rumor. Schloter himself publicly denied the rumor on TV a couple of weeks ago and said they're in negotiations with Apple and that they aren't interested in the 2G version.

And as for a 3G phone being released in Feburary: not going to happen. Apple said they'd introduce such a phone in the 3rd or 4th quarter this year at the earliest.

Bummer ...

I currently own an iPhone and am totally in love with it. Works great. Best phone I have owned. I would get a new model in a heartbeat once it gets officially released here.

Hmm.. lots of different rumour sites are saying similar things - that there is to be a media event at the end of Feb, though it might be the SDK launch.

TUAW tip-off.

I don't think the handset will be subsidised in any way on the Swiss market. Also, 75 chuffs a month is similar to the French & German pricing (remember, Jobs has to get his 14% too)
