You can go crazy with all this speculation, but supplies of the 2G are currently thin in some stores with no date for next deliveries and the US website is quoting a week delivery when it has typically been 24 hours. This has meant in the past that Apple has run down old stocks before introducing new.

Quote from Appleinsider:

In Manhattan and searching for an iPhone? You'll reportedly have no luck finding one today.
Manhattan iPhone sellout

Apple's Manhattan-based retail stores and others are having trouble maintaining stock of iPhones.

The Huffingtonpost is reporting that not a single iPhone -- either 8GB or 16GB -- was available for purchase on Tuesday from any of the company's three flagship retail stores on the island.

"Apple Store employees at all three New York locations -- the original SoHo store, the 59th Street location, and the most recent addition, on West 14th Street -- have confirmed that each store is sold out of iPhones, and they don't know when they'll be getting new ones," the paper said.

AT&T retail stores in Manhattan aren't yet feeling the affects of the shortage, though Apple's online store is also reflecting an approximate 1 week delay for all new orders, suggesting that considerable backlog currently exists for whatever reason."

...

I really should get out more. stupid useless rumour speculation about a blummin' electronic device. Jees

uk store has 24 hr shipping still for the iphone.

what worries me is the idea of getting the iphone in 2009.

oooh this speculation gets my hopes up again, probably only to be dashed next week.
I for one expect a 32gb 3G iPhone with OLED screen and a second camera for video chat to be announced for the swiss market next week.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

i for one will buy you a massive beer and give you a kiss without even knowing you, if that mouth watering prospect turned into reality.

however, there is about as much chance of that as there is of me winning the euromillions.

alternatively i have just slipped into a coma without knowing it and woken up at the same desk, it is june 2009 already?

"Mouth watering" is right....

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Of course we should also absolutely ignore the fact that April 1st will also be Apple's 32nd birthday.

(For me, the fact that it's also Fools' Day will probably be more appropriate )

why would austria be releasing it then?
theres there the rub ...

oh & 30% kickbacks to Apple, don't think Swisscom would be too keen without 3G supported.

oh & upgrade will be interesting :

Quote:
“Usually networks prevent handset upgrades during contract term because the cost of the device is subsidised in line rental over the lifetime of that contract. This is not the case with the iPhone, as all of the handset cost has been paid upfront by the customer at point of sale. If a customer wants to upgrade from the current iPhone to a newer version less than 18 months later, where is the downside for O2? In fact, why not happily upgrade customers to a newer iPhone (taking another small percentage of the hardware sale in the process) and use that opportunity to reset and extend their existing 18 month contract?”
of course, the customer comes first.

Do Apple have a history of making birthday announcements? It would be a good are-they-aren't-they debate for a while.

I'm stuck in an Orange 2 year contract for a while, so I'm not in the market for the iPhone for the moment. However, I do keep an eager eye , and I hope this thread is seriously bumped (or a new one started for later merger) when the announcement finally arrives

.....
Not as far as I know...the major product announcements are usually in Jan at the Macworld Expo. However, if there was an upgrade / country launch in the pipeline in any case, then 1st April would be an appropriate date for them to pick.

(OK, I know I'm clutching at straws but just indulge me huh?! )

Hi,

I had not realised that Apple's birthday is the 1st of April or April Fools day....really all things considered that does seem really appropriate.

Have fun

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Now that's interesting. Digging down into the site shows that it's on backorder and there are no confirmed delivery dates. Nevertheless, it's very interesting that they'd even put it on there.

Does anyone know how long it's been up?

EDIT: Looks like they are offering a variety of contracts with all providers. Hmmm, I'm starting to smell something a bit ratty....

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

The pricing suggests that they are imported american phones. The difference in price between the different storage capacities should be closer to that of the iPod touches, i.e. 629/839 rather than 699/799.

http://www.toppreise.ch/prod_133850.html

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

I have read that you get get a spoofing AT&T Sim hack to allow it to connect to swiss networks using your own SIM too. What are the risks associated with importing an iphone under these conditions ?

a) could such a workaround be easily blocked ?
b) Is the iphone usable (or at all) as an itouch without the simcard hack ?

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

So there's absolutely loads of rumours about the 3g iphone at the moment, it looks like it is *definitely* possibly * maybe * coming in June, even that chap Mr Mossberg said 'within 60 days' a bit too authoritatively. There's details about which chip will be used, and so what features will be available. Luvly jubly and all that....

.... but does anyone have ANY news of the damned thing being sold legally here in Switzerland, fully supported with visual voicemail and all the rest of the jazz? I don't want an unlocked one. Even the Australians are are likely to get it before us.

<sigh> is that krlock's bell I can hear ringing

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

But the unlock is so easy. Download a small piece of software; plug in your iphone; click one button; wait a few minutes; done!

And then the only thing you miss out on is visual voicemail, because it's a feature of the operator, not the iphone.

They even have support for WPA2 Enterprise WiFi authentication in the last software revision.
