yeah, thats called ABON. If you pay 200.-, for 24 months. That 4800 in 24 months =/

you pay 9 times as in ricardo.ch =/
??? That's not what I meant - you pay 200 Fr. ONCE, not 24 times, of course.
The phone will cost about 200 Fr., the subscription will probably be around 40 to 75 Fr. / month, depending on the amount of data volume included.

But even if you import the phone from the US you'll need a data subscription here in order to use it - and that, too, costs between 49 to 59 Fr. per month + at least 12 fr for the basic subscription plus your phone-calls and SMS.

There's no doubt in my mind that the specific iPhone subscriptions will be cheaper than putting together your own iPhone plan.

Hmm. But you dont HAVE TO get a plan if you alredy got one, its just changing phones. My stepsister already got herself an ABO. She pays 25.- a month, 100 free sms a month, 0,20.- per text, plus free calls from 8pm-6pm swisscom-swisscom users.

The problem is that she'll need an extensive data plan for the iPhone. The iPhone constantly connects to the internet, to download e-mail, weather info etc - there's no way to stop it from doing that which doesn't involve crippling the phone's usability.

Also, Safari on the iPhone doesn't do any data compression and will transfer a TON of data volume when browsing on the go. Data volume without a data plan is insanely expensive.

A data plan that includes 1.5gb per month costs 49 Fr. with Swisscom (that's in addition to the subscription she already has). Swisscom also offers the "surf options" which cost 10 and 20 Fr. respectively but they don't include nearly enough volume so they're pretty much unusable with the iPhone.

I definitely don't recommend using the iPhone without a data flatrate - I tried that for a month and got a phone bill of 560 Fr.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Uhh no, she actually sometimes just connects her Internet in a Wi-Fi zone. She even just connected to our LAN or from her own server.

Its WAP ready, so you just connect it wherever you are IF you get a signal.

OGO on the other hand is like that.

Are you referring to my post? wasn't sure.
Anyway, I have an iPhone and can assure you that this sucker is constantly connected and constantly transfers data. Yes, you can use WiFi where it's available - but in between it'll use EDGE unless you disable it. But then: if you disable EDGE, what would you need an iPhone for?

I predict the 3G iphone will be available from 15th June and I wonder if Steve is going to pull something else out of the bag too...
The question will be: when will it be available in Switzerland?

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Well, things are starting to happen for the Swiss iPhone. The Swiss Apple store (along the others) went offline - and Swisscom is changing its website.

up until this afternoon, www.swisscom.ch/iphone was redirected to Swisscom's media website. Now it's showing Error 400. A concidence? I think not.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Soooo... Orange or Swisscom? A quick browse of the two sites shows that Orange's HSDPA coverage is (allegedly) a bit better than Swisscom's in my area, but Swisscom offers 7.2Mbit/s as opposed to Orange's 3.6.

Any insiders got info on likely plan pricing - and will the CH providers insist on a limited data bundle??

Doesn't Orange only have service on 1800?

I'd take better coverage at 3.6Mbit/s over lesser coverage at twice the speed any day.

3.6 is enough.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Dear Orange/Swisscom, please visit the O2 website and learn.

*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won't cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it's just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff.

All tariffs include unlimited browsing on your iPhone, unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voicemail and reduced roaming rates with our International Traveller Service and are subject to a minimum term contract of 18 months.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Well, the keynote has come and gone. For me it was something of a damp squib to be honest. Lots of demonstrations of games on the iphone.... not the principal reason the typical iphone buyer makes a purchase is it? And basically nothing else except the rebranding of .mac, which is interesting but hardly radical.

Anyhow, I will NOT be upgrading my unlocked original 8gb iphone to the new one initially. I was surprised and disappointed that 32gb was not offered as the ipod touch has been available in this capacity for months. I will wait until 32gb is available and then make a decision, as 16gb is still not enough to satisfy my needs.

Even the lowest £30 tariff is Sfr70 per month!! - and that would be without calls . While I can assume it will not be that high here in Switzerland, that is a lot of beer money for a contract.
