Swisscom price details are on their website.

At first glance this is not very special. Max data limit of 1gb, does not include any phone minutes...? Time for a bit more of an in-depth read, methinks.

(Crosspost, sorry ric.)
nope, no phone minutes included. But the monthly prices are the lowest world-wide, so far. Most other countries don't have data flatrates either.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

oh, and all price-plans include unlimited WiFi access on all Swisscom hotspots.

edit: after having looked at the detailed plan description, this info has proven to be wrong: while using WLAN hotspots is free, it uses up your included data volume :-(
The good news: additional data volume is capped at 5 Fr. per day, so no (very) bad surprises at the end of the month.

Am I alone in being willing to pay more, providing I get some minutes, texts and either unlimited or a LOT more data? Come on Orange...

The problem with Orange is: they don't have an EDGE network. Their 3G network is quite spotty. Once you're outside their 3G coverage, you can kiss surfing with your iPhone good-bye. I'd think they'll offer a real data flat simply because they know that nobody can use up more than 1gb per month anyway on their network - because half of the time people will be surfing at 9.6kb/s...

I've never noticed any troubles with the 3g coverage on my orange phone. I think it even works in the mountains, though I don't check it much up there.

I never have coverage at home (suburb of Basel) nor in my office (Basel city). It works at both locations when I'm outside. I also don't get 3G coverage at my parents' house on Lake Constance (which sucks, because that's where I use my Orange Option data stick most often)

Says the most expensive subscription plan is 55 Fr., incl. 1gb data volume and phone calls cost 50 Rp. per hour. iPhones go for 99 and 199 Fr. with this plan.

Unfortunately, those who already have a Swisscom subscription won't be able to buy an iPhone with these plans, they're only for new customers. For all the others, the phone will be sold starting at 519 Fr. without a subscription (for the 8gb version)

The smallest subscription package starts at 25 Fr. per month and includes 100mb traffic, phone calls cost 70 rp per hour, phones cost 249 and 349
Wow, that's way cheaper then I was fearing. I was thinking minimum of 60 fr..

I didn't see this on the Swisscom site. Do you have a link? My contract is up for renewal in Nov so I should be able to get a subsidized iPhone then, right?

I called Swisscom: if your contract is up for renewal, you can get a subsidized one (in November, or possibly a couple of weeks earlier, didn't ask). The subsidized price of the handset will be determined according to your "discount level" (heavy users / good customers will get better discounts).

What doesn't work: you can't buy the iPhone subsidized on Juli 11 and have your subscription renewed in advance. You have to wait until your subscription is up for renewal. There's no upgrade offer at this time.

What I'll do: I'll sign up for a new contract and get the phone for the full discount. I'll then cancel my current subscription (which is up for renewal in October) and pay the remaining 36 Fr. until the subscription is terminated (I'm on the 12 Fr./month price-plan right now). I'll lose my old number - but since I've been getting spammed and tele-marketed on that one anyway, I'm not sad to see it go :-)

A closer lunchtime inspection of the highest price tarif (pdf) and it's better than I first thought.

Are they pre-registering...? Or is it bun-fights at 8am/6pm?

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

The prices really aren't too bad when you compare them to the liberty package for other phones. CHF 10 more per month for the mezzo package. I would assume you could also do the typical add-ons such as SMS 50 for CHF 8 per month.

Mediamarkt and Interdiscount took pre-registrations. Last time I went to Mediamarkt, they had stopped accepting orders because they had reached the number of phones they'll be getting on the first day.

I reserved one at Interdiscount but it's still going to be a mess on Juli 11 because most people will get a new subscription (incl. credit screening for each one...). I'll be bringing a camping-chair and plenty of bottled water.

go to www.swisscom.ch/iphone - beneath "prices and tariffs" click on "for residential customers". Now click on the link to the price-plan you're interested in. A PDF will download that contains the info (among other details)

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Can someone explain something to me ? You can get internet via your telephone on the iphone. That obviously costs (depending on your provider). Someone told me today that they had been charged for using the WLAN function for internet connection. Surely this can't be correct can it ? Or is there some jiggery pokery going on if you use their hotspots ?

All phones are locked, AFAIK. Interdiscount told me they won't be getting unlocked ones. You could only make reservations for either one locked to Orange or one locked to Swisscom.

The prepaid ones are definitely locked. Perhaps someone will be selling unlocked ones in third-party stores.
