Can someone explain something to me ? You can get internet via your telephone on the iphone. That obviously costs (depending on your provider). Someone told me today that they had been charged for using the WLAN function for internet connection. Surely this can't be correct can it ? Or is there some jiggery pokery going on if you use their hotspots ?
I'm not sure I'm getting this right: did he get charged for using WLAN at home?

Using public WLAN mostly isn't free. Swisscom DSL subscribers get 60 minutes of free WLAN airtime per month on Swisscom hotspots. Additional time costs extra. The new iPhone subscriptions contain up to 1gb of data volume that can be used on both their 3G network and their public hotspots.

Using WLAN at home is free, though.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

I have to say I'm positively surprised by this prices. Even with the abo that lacks a monthly charge, the iPhone is significantly cheaper than the touch.

Here's hoping Orange can push down prices even further.

I've just noticed this too - was looking at my sunrise prepaid charges and last month was charged several times for accessing the free WLAN at work, using my iPhone. The charges seem rather haphazard too - on the same day, a 5 minute 39 seconds access cost CHF 1.20, in the same hour another 3 min 13 sec access cost CHF 5.40 ! I was accessing the same website.
Would love to know what's going on.

Aren't you charged on data transferred?

Not that this isn't extremely odd. If they were charging by data, why don't the just show it on the bill.

It's all classed as data on the print out but I'm not sure how they distinguish between the subcategories 'www' which are charged and 'internet' which isn't.
Here's a snapshot of being on the same website within several minutes and the varying costs:
20:10:03 Sunrise live und Mobiles Internet internet 0:13:32 0.00
20:05:04Sunrise live und Mobiles Internet www 0:04:59 0.10
20:05:04Sunrise live und Mobiles Internet internet 0:04:59 0.00
20:04:40Sunrise live und Mobiles Internet www 0:00:240.40

And that includes what appears to be a double charge at 20.05 (this was obviously all the same day)

I guess I need to contact sunrise but I know for a fact that at that time, I was surfing the English Forum....

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Interesting, AT&T will offer the iPhone with no commitment for $699 and Swisscom will offer it for CHF 619.

For once it looks like we don't get scr*w*d on the exchange rate.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

Oh and also I don't really understand this system that swisscom is using for the iPhone 3G. Is it and amount of minutes and texts per month or is it just all of the minutes you called and all of the texts you called and then put on a bill? Also is 100MB of data volume good? Thanks.

What? I don't really understand your first question, but it pertains to how many minutes and texts are included per month?
None of Swisscom's offers come with included minutes or texts as far as I can tell.

100MB of data per month isn't a whole lot if you're surfing these days. And if you're purchasing and downloading media and/or apps, forget about it.

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

I've had conflicting information regarding when Orange will give out their price plans - one report said they would release details on July 11 which seemed stupid. I just got a mail from Orange saying:

Thank you for your interest in the new Apple iPhone 3G and for registering with Orange. You will be one of the first to receive detailed information about our attractive Orange iPhone offer.

We can already confirm that you will have the choice between 3 devices:
8 GB in black
16 GB in black or white
Get prepared for the 11th of July to be one of the first to enjoy the iPhone 3G combining a phone, a widescreen iPod, and a breakthrough Internet device with rich HTML email and a desktop-class web browser.

We will be in touch with you within the next few days with attractive offers.

Here's hoping...

I sounds like Orange were waiting for Swisscom to release the details of their tariffs before they came up with something.

That was to be expected.

Btw: http://www.20min.ch/digital/dossier/...story/10355430

Orange and Swisscom are directly in charge for delivering the iPhones. I'd say they'll make sure that their own stores get an ample supply and all the others will have a hard time getting any. I was stupid enough to reserve mine in Interdiscount who'll only get a handful, if any, on July 11 according to a salesperson there.

The safest bet for getting one will be in an Orange shop, as they haven't been accepting pre-orders yet but will as soon as the prices are published.
My wife reserved her's this morning at Swisscom and they guaranteed her that she won't get it on the 11th. Will take several weeks before they can fulfill all pre-orders.

With Swisscom, do they force you to take one of those crap tariffs or can you choose another one at a similar cost?

Re: iPhone in Switzerland

I like how Apple aren't taking responsibility...NOT. Good advice wait and see, early adopters are always punished. The upside is there's little reason more for customs to check you for 'em when returning from US/UK and the Original iphone price will drop. My mate recently paid 600CHF for one unlocked. Anyone know the recent Ricardo prices?

If you want a different contract, you can buy a Prepaid package and use the phone with any other (Swisscom) contract.

They also have unlocked ones that sell for about 1100.-
