Apple's genius is in the interface. If you don't care about such things or are stuck in the Windows way of organization then I'd say don't bother with the iPhone. Otherwise, be ready to think how you ever got along without an iPhone when you've got your grubby mitts on one!

My Tech analyst next door says that the on-contract price in the US right now is 499 / 599 USD. Off-contract about 300 extra. Definitely not 499 off-contract.
AT&T Wireless (Cingular) offer this at the above prices on a two year contract, so EU type phone subsidising not going on ... $499 gets you 4GB, $599 gets you 8GB.

Have not yet seen an off contract price, after considerable reserch, AT&T probably have negotiated that out for the duration of their exclusive & am pretty sure that any European players will do exactly the same ....

Re: IPHONE in Switzerland

The first commercial has appeared for the iPhone. It's due out (the phone not the commercial) on June 29th.

Here's the advert:

Here's the advert:

that is the old advert and shows virtually nothing of the iphone.

However, over the weekend apple released three more adverts for the iphone which do indeed show it off quite nicely....

www.apple.com/iphone/ads

however, you need quicktime to see them. For those without, you can find the new ads with a bit of searching on youtube. for example, type in "never been an ipod" (that is the name of one of the new ads).

now if only they will bloody release the thing over here!!!!

regards
krlock.

Re: IPHONE in Switzerland

all i can say is, word.

i'm here home in new york waiting for the day they release the iphone. unfortunately, i won't be here anymore on june 29 (THE DAY!!!). have to be back at work in frankfurt before i move to zurich july 1.

i'm chucking my blackberry. totally, completely parting from it once i get my hands on iphone. i've alerted my sister to get me it as soon as it comes out (hopefully i'd be one of the luckier ones!!!).

and yes... it's the apple hype. i'm a junkie. just bought the 24'' imac, have the mini mac and considering the laptop too. the thing is, i don't even do much with them. i just have to have them. it's an addiction.

anyway - yes. i'm on board with iphone. hope i get my hands on one on release day.

are you willing to stop using mobile e-mail alltogether? The iPhones on-screen keyboard is crap. No way you could type anywhere as fast as on your BB

Re: IPHONE in Switzerland

Try out the LG Prada which in terms of hardware is very similar to the iPhone and is already available in Switzerland at Carphone Warehouse. I am with Dawiz this phone is not designed for the typical Blackberry or Windows Mobile user who want it to map the web or write emails. Without a real keyboard it will be pain.

Also another phone which is interesting is the htc touch (www.htctouch.com). I have not seen it but it looks interesting and is available today in europe. I just hope they have another model with a keyboard.

Until Apple produces a phone which does more than my existing phone I don't see the big deal.

Obviously, I haven't used it myself. But I have seen it in action (have a look at the official ads, for example) and I have read a quick review by some journalist who got a closer look at it after the demonstration in San Francisco earlier this year. It doesn't have tactile feedback and the keys seem to be very small. There is a software component which is designed to automatically correct mis-typed words - I guess it will all hinge on the quality of the latter. I seriously doubt it'll correct Swiss-German, though - the language I usually type my short messages in.

I also toyed with the Prada phone at the Orbit in Zurich a couple of weeks ago and found the on-screen keyboard utterly lacking.

While I might be wrong, I dare say that the keyboard will be nowhere as useable as that on Blackberry devices.

regards,

dawiz

Re: IPHONE in Switzerland

fair comments.

however, on the other hand, i have read a couple of articles on the internet (unconfirmed i must admit) that feedback from those who have been able to use an iphone describe the form factor, the screen, and the interface, as just about perfect.

of course, since the iphone is released at the end of the month, soonish we will be able to read lots of in depth reviews.

what i want to know though, is when and where i can buy one in zurich!!!

Re: IPHONE in Switzerland

krlock? i'm the first to admit that i know nothing about the micro stuff on gadgets, but only want to have them (yes, yes - - i'm quite superficial in this sense but i'm still nice :-)

if i manage to get an iphone in the states, you think i can use it in zurich? or shall i wait til it comes out in q4 in europe? i mean, my blackberry in the states is with me everywhere i go. it's like my running sneakers... those 2 go with me all over.

thanks!

The problem will be that the iPhone won't be available without a (2-year) contract with AT&T. They don't just sell the phone as a stand-alone product - they market it together with some data- and voicemail services.

Apart from that: I don't know if the phone will be locked. But specs-wise, it should work on European GSM networks, too (it's quad-band).

Re: IPHONE in Switzerland

indeed the initial impression I've gotten is that it would be sold as "latched" to AT&T for two years - at $399/$499.

Overpriced in the market, even if it is nice. 80Gb video iPod in the US is $349.
