ADSL without telephone?

Dear all,

just moved in a new flat, and no telephone nor internet is present ...
awful life, disconnected..

Is possible to activate the ADSL without being obliged having the fixed telephone?

Best regards,
Edo

Re: ADSL without telephone?

Hi Edo

We recently wanted the same, you have a few options to explore.
  • If your tv is offered from Cablecom
  • your mobile service provider - Sunrise have a pretty good deal
Hope this helps

Cheers

I don't know what it's worth, but Orange has an offer for a HSPA router called Flybox with the appropriate data plan.

http://www.orange.ch/orangehomepack/flybox

Depending on the time you plan to stay in your apartment you might still want to investigate with Swisscom or Cablecom to get a proper wired line as the speed will always be much better than any wireless solution.

Re: ADSL without telephone?

Swisscom offers V/ADSL without phone - no 911 (114) on that line - voice freq. are cutted of.

I have VDSL with phone line - way way better service than any other - had Cablecom and sunrise and green.

Then you are the only one in the world. If you CableCom it's internet via cable (ie TV cable), not telephone, which is what ADSL is.

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a form of DSL, a data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than a conventional voiceband modem can provide.

Cable internet and ADSL are both broadband but not both the same...

Re: ADSL without telephone?

Swisscom - Maybe see post above

Cablecom - yes - but only with TV

All others (genuine DSL) are resellers of Swisscom and as they make a loss on the wholesale rental, other services must be purchased.

Sunrise currently offering DSL for free if you sign up for the unbundled local loop - but it's only available in a few areas right now. But otherwise they are reselling as well.....

The I stand corrected. My neighbour has asked to be disconnected from just the TV and keep his Internet connection and has been informed it's impossible. Have you checked to see if the TV works still? He was told it was technically not possible to decouple the signals... but that may be because we live in BFE.......

In my case, I applied for Cablecom cable internet and was using it for two months prior to applying for Cablecom TV. The modem plugs into one of the three sockets which also house the TV connection.

Re: ADSL without telephone?

Cablecom do allow you to register for just the internet only without the telephone as I have just done it. They are also slightly cheaper than Swisscom and currently have 50% off for 3 months.

Re: ADSL without telephone?

Another alternative, smooch off of your neighbor's wireless router! With permission, of course.

Joking aside, anyone know if the terms and conditions prevent sharing of this kind?

Hi,

Can you guys confirm whether or not an ADSL wireless modem/router will work with a Cablecom internet connection? I'm just about to order Cablecom internet and am wondering if my ADSL wireless modem/router from the UK will work.

Many thanks.

Cablecom consumer internet is over their cable TV system (which is DOCSIS, not ADSL)

So the answer is No, your UK router will not work with standard cablecom internet

Won't work.

You can get cablecom without TV or Phone. When I signed up for Cablecom Internet only without Phone and TV, they sent me a cablemodem. You can use it with several computers. I have used it with 1 PC connected on the USB port, and 1 on the RJ45 port.

If your Router is a "router" you CAN use it with the cable modem.
if your router is an "ADSL-Router", you CAN NOT use it with Cablecom.

If you go for ADSL, pay attention to the 2versions Annex A and Annex B.
Annex A has an RJ11 connector and only works if your Phone is ANALOG
Annex B has an RJ45 connector and only works if you have ISDN
DO NOT buy ADSL Routers in Germany if you have Analog. Germany ONLY has Annex B.

Re: ADSL without telephone?

Just to give an update to others looking for *DSL a couple of years later:

- Swisscom will provide ADSL without fixed telephone line - provided that you subscribe to their mobile (keyword: NATEL). Mobile monthly fee starts at 26 CHF, fixed tel. at 25.xx. What a coincidence.

- Price for ADSL (VDSL) is currently (2010-08) 69 CHF/m for the fastest home customer line on top of the line fee. Basic symmetric DSL is only available through business services, and at something like 2Mbps it didn't really fit the bill for me. (If anyone knows of faster DSL, symmetric or not, do drop a line. 24 Mbps is sort of a bummer, what with 100M and 1G connections out there in the wide world.)

- Got really helpful, prompt, and efficient service at Swisscom phone service, made my day. (Old tenant hadn't released their line; customer service clarified the matter, redirected the old customer, and proceeded to set me up with a line. The modem and the bill should arrive by post this week, and the line should be already up. We'll see if everyday service keeps up with new customer enticement...

Cheers,
//ata

Re: ADSL without telephone?

...actually, I'd like to edit my post, since it went a bit off-topic. Can't find the function, so the summary is:

Seems like the telcos are, or at least Swisscom is, still playing games with the customer, and naked ADSL is illusory at best. In my case, the need for net and convenience outweighed the negatives. Mixed bag.
