Advice sought: Recommended alternatives to iTunes ?

Hi,

I am not sure if this should be in off topic or not as it is not related to Switzerland.

I purchased iPod nano for my wife as one of the colours is her favourite colour I used to the other music management programmes and I am finding iTunes does not seem to work as I would like it to, which might because I always buy CD's and then rip them rather than buying anything from the iTunes store.

I am looking for an alternative to iTunes and though I can do a search on the internet what I really would be interested in is what people here can recommend.

The areas where I would really like to work easily are:
  • if I drop a ripped CD into a directory then the programme should automatically detect this has happened and add it my music library.
  • if I sync the ipod on different computers and there is music already on the device it should not suggest it needs to delete everything on the device before syncing...it should just merge the new content.
  • it would be great if I could use drag and drop between my pc based music library and the device.
Has anyone got any good suggestions ?

Thanks

Martin

You can do all of these things on I-tunes. I regularly rip my cds onto my I tunes collection with out any problems. YOu simply open i tunes , insert the cd and it will ask automatically if you want to burn them, and where you want them placed.
You can sync your ipod onto up to 3 seperate pcs, and you can drag and drop music from your pc onto an ipod.

Re: Advice sought: Recommended alternatives to iTunes ?

hi,

sorry I should have said on Windows. Banshee does look good and though it seems to be running on Linux it is written in C# so in theory it should be possible to port it to Windows....just depends on what dependencies it has on libraries that are only available on Linux.

Thanks

Martin

Re: Advice sought: Recommended alternatives to iTunes ?

Hi
thanks for your advice about iTunes but it is not my primary program for ripping CDs as I have multiple devices I use including a soundbridge and I don't always rip the cds on the same machine. In fact the machine I use for streaming music does not even have a cd player (eee box).

Thanks

Martin

When iTunes started getting to bloated I switched to Winamp. I believe you can synch your iPod with it and it seems to work a little better then iTunes for most functions.

Re: Advice sought: Recommended alternatives to iTunes ?

I agree with Karlnmik, iTunes has these features and does them quite well...I use it and really like it. I think it's probably a matter of getting used to it. I never buy music from the iTunes store, and I'm ripping loads of CD's from my extensive CD collection into digital format...It even figures out Album names, artists, track names, etc. I do download the free songs of them week from the Itunes store
