Is it better to buy Sky thru a agent or thru a friend in UK

Dear All,

Did some research basis the various links on the site - it seems that if I take a sky tv connection thru an agent in Europe, then I need to pay £100 as service fee and another £120 for the box - while these costs wont be incurred if I ask a friend to order it in UK and then ship it to me.

But not very sure if the box and card would continue working in SWI if I go thru my friend in UK?

Any suggestions?

Samsan

Re: Is it better to buy Sky thru a agent or thru a friend in UK

naturally you'll pay a handling fee per month for Sky through an agent.

Discounted box must be installed and connected to the phone line in the UK - also offer is ONE PER HOUSEHOLD so if you use a friend, they will have to pay for a box.

Since you're in Lugano, consider perhaps looking at Sky Italia - you can get this in Media Markt in Grancia (they do at least sell the boxes). Most of Sky Italia is available in original language so this might suit you better.

If you go the UK-route, I'd pay for the box and simply abuse the UK friend's address. You can use a Swiss credit card too....

Buy a second hand box and card on Ebay and get it shipped out, if you only want BBC1, ITV etc. If you want the full sky package it is going to cost, but there are companies who will do this for you.

A bit of Googling should reveal quite a few e-tailer places happy to ship a basic cardless Sky box from the UK to Switzerland, even more who'll send one to an address in the UK. Then just register Sky at a mates address in the UK to order a card.

Even better if you can do the setting up of the box there (when you get the card you'll need to get it paired) and then bring the box over but there's a well written guide here to explain how to do it either way.

Yes I tried the multiroom deal. It worked for about two months. Then Sky started sending me letters saying that both boxes must be connected to the same phone line. This is a bit tricky when one box is in Besancon and the other is in Zurich. Now I just pay twice.

Re: Is it better to buy Sky thru a agent or thru a friend in UK

Thats strange. I found out a bit about this and a few dealers said it is only Sky plus that has to be connected to the telephone. People who have one box on the normal system are not obliged t have it connected to the phone line so I wonder how they control that and why they check people with 2

Because Telephone connection is mandatory for multiroom

Indeed - what Gav's saying is "don't you think Sky have thought about all of the ways people will try to cheat the system already?"

and subscriptions abroad are not cheating the system
