Torrent laws

Hey guys, does anybody know what the laws are in switzerland on torrenting/ file sharing, and if any isp's are heard of throttling connections of known file sharers, or anything about authorities getting involved with file sharing here.

I tried a bit of googling and couldn't find anything that i was looking for, thanks

Googling is great, but the English Forum search function is even better! This topic has been discussed many times and I am sure you can find what you are looking for.

Re: Torrent laws

Surely with little effort could one also post some useful information about the topic in this thread for the rest of us - instead of being the first to jump on the "use the seach" band wagon.

That is why i subscribe to EF threads.

Have a nice day.

When topics have been discussed to death it's perfectly reasonable to ask that someone spend a little effort searching to find some info. People get tired of posting the same things again and again, and it's unreasonable to expect them to keep doing so.

Re: Torrent laws

Very quickly, in Switzerland it is LEGAL to DOWNLOAD for your own use but ILLEGAL to SHARE copyrighted material.

So, turn off the share feature on your computer if you go to a P2P site or you will be in trouble. This means you may be charged. This can be very messy if you are on a CH work permit.

Hope this is clear.

Verbier, this is a reduction that academically isn't correct.

Have a look at these threads:

Do Cablecom monitor your dowloads?
Pirate downloads

In addition:

Purchasing TV episodes online?

Torrent laws

So basically I can download torrents willy-nilly (within reason) and in Switzerland i'm not at risk (however minor) of getting a slap on the wrist?

EDIT - Not sure why my post was moved since I posted in an existing thread and i'm with Cablecom...

Surely with "little effort" the bone idle could use the search function instead of those who already answered the question previously doing it again...

Re: Torrent laws

If you want to be on the safe side, you better get a Rapidshare.com Premium account. Costs around 6 francs per month.

There you do not upload and you usually max out your connection.

Is there as much content as on torrents? From what ive seen though they split large files into a gazillion smaller ones, would be a pain in the rear to download seperately...

Surely the whole point about torrents is that you're downloading and uploading (i.e. sharing) at the same time. In which case the answer to your question would be "no".

Rapidshare isn't a torrent site, you initiate the downloads of the files in smaller parts seperately... usually in .rar format, and while I realise you can use a mass downloader and then merge the files afterwards, it's still a pita in comparison to using uTorrent. I know what torrents are.

I wonder why I actually tried to point out to not have another discussion in this thread.

Simply start the discussion again in the old ones, otherwise you generate a duplicate...

I did try, then the mods moved it back to this thread, and since you're not a mod...

I was quoting (loosely) a lawyer representing the music industry in Switzerland who was interviewed on Swiss French TV about a week or so ago. For what it is worth, I got the impression that they are working with the Internet providers to go after people who are sharing so it is very important to turn off the share function on your PC if you using any P2P site.

The last point about the share feature is what I wanted to make sure the OP understood (in order to avoid a potentially major problem).

Piracy laws in Switzerland?

Hi!

I've searched the forums for "piracy" but found no answers. If this has been discussed and answered already elsewhere a link would be appreciated

I heard a rumour that some law was changed or some agency had been given permit to collect IP-numbers in Switzerland... or sumthin...

So my question is: Does anyone here know? ...cause I have no clue, and want to know.

Is it illegal to download or only illegal to upload/share?

Thanks in advance

Re: Piracy laws in Switzerland?

I know that it came in the news a few months ago that it's not illegal to download but it is to upload. The goverment found that it shouldn't be our job to find out if the site we're downloading from is legal or illegal. It is illegal though to upload. One software I can recommend is http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ You can download youtube clips to mp3 files. So you won't have the danger of getting any viruses like with the P2P softwares
