isnt it surfing inernet is data transfer?
if i watch a movie online, is it data transfer? or just really downloading will be considering as data transfer?

EVERYTHING you do online involves data transfer - surfing web pages, email, watching online videos, downloading music, chat, twitter, twatter blah blah blah

Their system will count every byte going down the wire (ether?), and once you hit 5GB, they can throttle your connection down.

5GB is not a lot when it comes to video .. I would stick to email, chat and the usual web pages.

considering the not-so-great 3G coverage and non-existent EDGE on Orange's network, the 5GB will be enough. Downloading movies or music is completely impossible outside the 3G coverage on Orange.

well "unlimited" is a flexible term when it comes to network providers :-)
It's "unlimited" in the sense that you don't have to pay extra if you use more than 5gb of data per month. It's not "unlimited" in the sense that they reduce your surfing speed once you're over 5gb. I guess they simply choose to ignore the 2nd fact.

I'm not going as far as calling them liars but I guess there are some pointers in that direction.

for normal internet usage (chatting, surfing, facebook etc. is all just internet usage, on a data-transmission level this is all the same) without downloading massive numbers of movies and music files it's enough, don't worry

Nowadays there is no such thing as "unlimited" internet, and everthing is subject to some form of "fair use" policy. There have been many complaints and issues with this in the UK about providers use of the word "unlimited" and then capping it with a low "fair use" policy. The last truly unlimited internet package was around 3 years ago and that stopped when they realised that it wasn't financiall sustainable, and you had hordes of people signing up and literally downloading terabytes of torrents, movies and music. The strain of this on any regular network is pretty much unbearable, and the closest you will get to "unlimited" in the UK now are the big providers like O2 and Virgin who are big enough to be able to place massive caps on their system, and unless you really, really take the ****... ou will be able to pretty much download whet you want.

However Switzerland is a small country and prices of calls and data are disproportionate to pretty much the rest of Europe. 3G internet connections are based over mobile telephony 3G networks and as such much moree expensive than traditional ADSL and cable connections, and will always be subject to caps.

If you're based mostly at home and you think ou'll need some serious bandwidth, then then get yourself a Cablecom cable or Swisscom ADSL connection.

Re: Orange internet

If one has a student ID, one should get one's arris down to Swisscom where they will give you 3G internet access for 39 francs per month - without any limits. They just abolished the 5Gb limit in Q2.

I still rarely top 500Mb on this connection - but my downloads are not via wireless Internet
