| | | Dowload limits - Swisscom/Cablecom
Just some very quick q's if I may =
i have searched on both Swisscom and Cabelcom websites, and Swisscom can offer Broadband with no download limitations via their full price option.
Does Cablecom offer the same - we will be very heavy users, with the internet on 24/7 due to work commitments.
Also, is the Swissom/Cabelcom offering ADSL? Or Fibre via a cable connection??

I am with Cablecom. I am on the 10mb service (hispeed 10'000). As I understand it from the installation people, there is fiber optic to the local control box then it is co-ax cable to the house. So actual speed will depend on the distance from the box.
I am spot on the 10mb speed.
I had a quick look at the site and I did not see any download limits.

Thank you Verbier -
I did check all the websites, but they are not very explicit with this detail!!
However, I am pleased that they have got the sites in 4 languages - esp. English - just makes things get done a lot quicker!! |

we are with cablecom on there 25mb package (or whatever it is now, they keep uping it) and use video calling quite a bit back to the uk, and have been know to download a film or two, and have never had any issues, no u/l or d/l limits that I have ever hit.

All of these services advertise "unlimited" data, but if you read their fineprint (and most ISPs' fineprint in Switz and abroad, for that matter), there will be a bit in there about "fair use".
This means if they deem you to be down-/uploading too much data (amount defined by them) they reserve the right to cut you off. They'll more likely warn you first though. So basically, unlimited isn't QUITE unlimited data, but is an amount high enough to cover most peoples' needs.
And please if someone knows me to be wrong, I'll defer, but I believe Swisscom's fastest offering (Infinity) is a VDSL service. It's basically like a souped-up ADSL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Hi...ne#Switzerland |

There was a time here in the UK where I left the PC on 24/7, but now I tend to switch it off during the day, and only power up when I am at home (sometimes leaving it on overnight) -
As long as the Michael is not taken, I have had no problems here to date (touch wood).

I haven't heard of any limit for Swisscom's ADSL or VDSL services, never reached it myself, never heard people complaining about it on the forums.

I use Swisscoms VDSL, which was set up in less than a week from the first call, and sometimes download several GB of data per day, haven't encountered a data limit yet, up to 2.5Mbyte/s.. Upload is significantly slower for some reason, haven't had really fast uploads yet... just up to 300kbs. Cablecom takes ages to get get started and have horrible customer service.

In my opinion you shouldn't worry at all about the unlimited download when it comes to Switzerland. I myself used to download loads from Swisscom without any warning.
Swisscom's infinity is indeed VDSL. You will have to test your connection to see what speed you can get as not everyone is eligible for VDSL: http://www.swisscom.ch/res/internet/...nity/index.htm |

Except when you look at the fastest profiles:
Max Swisscom VDSL: 20/5 Mbps (Down/Up)
Max Cablecom: 25/2.5 Mbps
Neither Cablecom nor Swisscom cap the download limit.
Cablecom have been expanding their network and will offer 100Mbps down by the end of 2009

I'm on Cablecom's 10 meg package, and I suspect there's either a problem with my modem or an automatic limit of some sort in place.
I frequently download very large public domain video lectures and other such titillating material via tools such as bit torrent. If I let it go for a day or three, then often when I come back from work, my Internet connection is completely disabled. A simple reboot of the cable modem takes care of everything.
So, I don't know (or frankly care!) whether the problem is due to tech or policy, but it is a minor inconvenience that you might (or might not) want to be aware of.
Cheers
Lance

I had the same Corbets, I rarely hit max Speed and I often felt like there was a cap after a certain amount downloaded back when I still had Cablecom. Nothing of the sort with Swisscom though.

In my opinion, there is no limiting or capping on my cablecom connection. I regularly go over 100Gb traffic in a month. Very regularly.....

same here, and recent torrents have come down and breakneck speeds, eg a film will come down in less then 30 minutes.
And we video call for about 1 hour everyday.
occasionally my wireless router throws a wobbly and needs resetting, but never had a problem with the modem.

I have a service of 15000/1500 from the old Cablecom tiers.
Contention may play a part in civilisation but in the Boonies, it seems less of a problem |

Thansk all for the replies - has put my mind at rest -
Seems like Swisscom is the better offering, but will have to see what the apartment we will be getting has (i.e. current Cabelcom connection, etc...)

If you are on Cablecom or Swisscom you should not have any problems.
I never heard of anyone who got a complaint from them.
Some smaller local ISP might moan if you donwload too much.

As mentioned, both companies have Fair Use policies, but I have Swisscom and in recent months, my monthly average has been 170GB traffic per month (I have the 25Mbit connection) and in one month hitting 860GB traffic... no problems at all.
