what's my land line number?

Hi,
I have just got a flat in Lausanne and I have a phone socket and tv socket but I have no idea how to set up a landline, which ADSL providers are available... do I need to sort out which company to have the landline with in order to get ADSL or does ADSL automatically include a phone line?

I've seen something called 'preselection' and the ADSL rates with bluewin without preselection are cheaper,.. but i have no idea what that means!!

Confused..
Hayley

Re: How do I find out my land line number?

hi hayley
for the landline you have to contact swisscom, who will set up the landline and set up your brandspanking new phone number ( all following links lead to the english sites)

http://www.swisscom-fixnet.ch/fx/pri...?languageId=en

AFTER that you can select another provider ( if you want to that is) such as sunrise, http://www.sunrise.ch/en/index.htm
tele.2 http://www.tele2.ch/en/index.php
cablecom, if its available in your region tho' this is not a very recommendable enterprise, but still if it might be the only one in your region ...............http://www.cablecom.ch/en/index.htm?setlang=4

hope this helps for a first

Cheers

See here:

http://www.post.ch/en/index/uk_priva...erzeichnis.htm

Enter Town and Canton, click Search, enter Street, click search again and there you should have it.

Re: How do I find out my land line number?

right, i've got to the page in swisscom where they now ask if i want to sign up to bluewin adsl.. you get one month free if you sign up for it straight away.
i'm not planning to move to lausanne just yet and i want to take full advantage of this free month..

i know that they will post you the modem n stuff but do i have to start paying from a week to 10 days after i sign up or when i activate the adsl connection with my new modem? i don't wanna sign up just yet if it means i'm paying for broadband in an empty flat..

Not quite true anymore, at most addresses you can get phone via cable and cut swisscom out completely if you like. Although its a bit "chose your poison"

Re: what's my land line number?

If you have a phone plug it in and dial your mobile and see the number.
Or try the phone book and look up your address? www.directories.ch

ADSL providers all use the same network so it does not matter which one you choose. I would stick to Bluewin because it's the same price as others but you get the excellent Swisscom service.
After you know your number go to www.bluewin.ch and you can order online.

i tried looking myself up in the directory but i'm not there.. the flat may be too new. however, i have worked out that in my appartment block, there's a butcher and two comedians..hmm. i'm sure there's some comedy value in that somewhere.

Re: what's my land line number?

Those profession details are funny, although fewer and fewer have those entered.

I also lived here for a while in the mid 80s with my parents, my Dad was listed as "journalist" which he was, for an international business magazine. Once he got a call from the local farmer: his pig had had a record size litter, did he want a scoop on the story...

Re: what's my land line number?

Do you know the name of the persons that were living in that place before you? Usually it is what Swisscom asks to check what is installed in your flat. It makes your life much easier (and cheaper). All they have to do is transfer the old line to your name and it is ready to go.....

Re: what's my land line number?

1. get a phone, try to plug it in see if it works
2. ask the project manager of the construction
3. or ask the landlord
4. Walk around the house (outside your apartment) to find a telephone cabinet/box. This is where all lines merge. Hope there is a sticker on the wires with the phone number.
5. If your phoneline is dead, call swisscom and ask for a new line (ANALOG! no ISDN b.s.!). Give them your name, address, and maybe the floor/door numbers. They will find you.

Re: How do I find out my land line number?

Hi Hayley,

I don't know if you can have an "adsl activation" delayed (or whether such a thing exists) however from my experience when I signed up for both the analog line and adsl connection, it all was set up in 1 (one!!) day and the first bill I had received was from that day onwards till the end of the month. That was 6 days so I paid 6/30th of the monthly fee. Just to give you an idea on their precision

Why not sign-up after you actually move in?

And if anything needs bending.. Aah well, nevermind.

Re: what's my land line number?

Hey Bender,
Thanks for the info. That's really useful to know. Which company did you set up your adsl with? I'm fairly set on sunrise at the moment because they give 3 months free...I am tempted by the bluewin tv channels but I guess I can decide whether to change after 3 months...

As for setting everything up when I move in.. that would be too organised. I tend to fret about things until they're sorted..

I signed up for the fixed line yesterday with Swisscom - they ask for someone in the building who can help with identifying the flat and the line. After that, they also asked which day I would like to switch it on and will post all the details to my current address. Very nice of them.

Hayley

Re: what's my land line number?

you might want to double-check if with Bluewin TV, you must have ADSL from Bluewin (Swisscom). I'd err on the side "yes".

Re: what's my land line number?

Yeah. I would definitely need bluewin adsl to get bluewin TV but I think i can still sign up 3 months of free adsl with sunrise first (with no tv)..... If I cancel with sunrise, I think I would have to pay 59fr for the cost of the modem but that's it if you cancel...

you get a free digital tv tuner with the sunrise package too but there are much fewer channels.

Does anyone have any recommendations/disaster stories with either bluewin or sunrise?

Re: what's my land line number?

Careful with the "just cancel after 3 months". Contracts are for 1 year term.
I did the same. Had sunrise, moved to bluewin. Had to pay 250 Fr "early termination" because I changed before my 1 year expired.

All providers use Swisscom's network and buy the capacity from Swisscom Wholesale. So there is no technical difference, except who is sending you the bill.

I believe prices are the same so I would stick to BW.

Re: what's my land line number?

Hmm.. sunrise claim that's a 3 month free trial so if i'm not satisfied, then I can cancel.. I read a bit of the fine print yesterday but I'll have another look.
Humph. I could have got 1 month free adsl with bluewin if i had signed up for it straight away with the fixed line... oh well..
