I am due for a new phone in the coming weeks and have been following the Milestone since early Nov 09'.
it is on top of my list, may i ask you to answer the following?
1)Best place to buy unbranded?
2)Out of the box what upgrades are a MUST?
3)Is there another phone you would point me toward other than Milestone?
NOTE: i am not techno savy. nore am i often around the pc/web/net to be upgrading, adding on or in general faffing (if there is such a word) with my phone. looking for an out of the box wifi, gps (voice guided) phone.
thanks in advance
Pos | | | | | 1) Digitec
2) See the Android applications thread
3) Not unless the phone had a hardware keyboard, and the Milestone is currently the only high-end android device with one. The upgrade to 2.1 will finish things off nicely for the most part.

I moved from a G1 (hardware keyboard) to a Nexus 1 (software keyboard) -- I was expecting to miss it, but in the end, not so much.

Any news/rumors of a GSM/UMTS version of the the DEVOUR ? http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US...VOUR_US-EN.alt
...looks like Motorola is launching their new devices on CDMA first and GSM/UMTS later on, if at all. Kind of a different approach than most other phone mfgs...

Less competition by HTC = bigger sales for Motorola. In Europe, they face an uphill battle with the smartphone market being about 3/4 of a year ahead of the US.

The easiest phone I have ever set up.
You just need a google mail account. You don't have to actually use it for mail, though.
It's the best phone so far. Yes it's not perfect, but no phone is... yet.
I use it in the Uk and Suisse (with O2 and Swisscom SIMs), and it's easy peasy.

Nexus is good, but has no hardware keyboard. After using a hardware keyboard now (and an average one a that) I dont think I will ever buy a touch-only phone again.

Anyone got the 2.1 update yet? I downloaded the update package from motorola instead of waiting for the OTA update and it left the phone stuck in bootloader mode. I had to re-flash a 2.01 rom and perform the 2.1 upgrade again (Motorola support suggested sending it to a service centre in the UK)
So, theres not a lot in this upgrade,
animated wallpaper (yawn)
voice dialer (not as good as MS Voice commander)
5 home screens but based on the old home screen not the new funky launcher
Beta googlemaps navigation but for US addresses only, it just exits as soon as the GPS fix tells it it is outside the US.
Updated camera app
No speech to text - this was mentioned in the release notes but apparently it's only enabled in selected english speaking countries.
No improvement of the defficient cut/paste and email apps

However I really reccommend getting hold of Copilot Live 8, it's awesome...

I am no longer chuffed to bits with my Milestone, those b4stards Motorola locked the bootloaded, making true custom ROMs impossible, and the 256MB memory is simply not enough for a high-end smartphone, and I am experiencing lag on a daily basis. I may reformat again.
I will also never buy another Motorola, HTC all the way now for me as far as Android phones go.

and with HTC.. u can update by urself?.. the keyboard is the main selling point for me .. also I heard that with 2.2 update u can make use of external memory for installing apps?

They voluntarily shafted their EU customers, and no amount of petitioning or moaning on their forums from a zillion people will make them care. | Quote: | | | | | You're going to get the new iPhone. I see a second-hand Moto Milestone up for sale at 250 CHF .. with android 2.1 update bought in November 2009 .. were there any hardware changes after that date on Milestone?
Except for 2 small hicks, I see phone is in perfect condition, anyone here thinks its too old to buy, maybe slow after these many months?
Also, Droid 2 is releasing this week.. does it mean Milestone 2 will release too?
Thanks a lot friends.

Yes it's a bit slow, yes you can't truly root it... personally I am now waiting for the next HTC/Samsung slide out QWERTY phone. Motorola locked the phone down on purpose, in stark contrast with the US Droid, and as such will never get my money again.

I'm not aware of any hardware changes but motorola screwed up alarms on the 2.1 update; often the phone won't come back from standby to sound an alarm, but as soon as you switch it on the alarm sounds. Motorla were in no hurry to even acknowledge the fault never mind actually fix it. it was left to the community to find out that you can flash part of a Verizon rom update to fix it, there are threads in t'internet about it.
I'm unlikely to buy another Motorola as I think their commitment to EU customers has been sadly lacking. I'm not sure I'd buy another Android phone actually, if there was a high end windows mobile device with a keyboard I'd be there.
btw Froyo (android 2.2) has been reported as coming to the milestone in September, that brings app2sd to store apps on the sd card instead of main memory.
