When a review is overawed (sensationalist) it's not convincing to me when the US market is only comparing to the iPhone & Blackberry baseline and while useful the tone may smack of insider hype.
We are lucky obviously. Any choice will probably be a joy to own (relatively speaking, if you don't have a girlfreind ).

Peter | | | | | But is it really too much to have asked for the Droid to have had a good camera and keyboard? Would it really have spelled doom for reality as we know it? Sigh, I guess it means we always have something to look forward to....

For me, that's not an issue but I guess for many people it may be. The keyboard's more of a problem. But from what I can tell, most keyboards become usable after some practice. So I wouldn't worry too much until the first user reviews trickle in

Peter | | | | | My 3 year old Nokia N82 had a great camera with great video recording... I don't see why it can't be improved on all that time later. I did use it often as a restult too. Meh, as you say, the keyboard is probably ok too with practise, though God knows why they kept two blank keys... that reeks of laziness.

The N95 8GB I had took some great photos with the same camera and Carl Zeiss lens.
Samsung has been producing phones with an optical zoom for a while now.
Which is probably good if the rest of the camera's functionality is on a par (and the rest of the phone's features are up to scratch) www.mobilephonereviews.org/article/digital-zoom-vs-optical-zoom/
But no-one else seems to have followed suit. I guess their budgets are all on Android ;-)
And what's with MP4? It's been around for years and yet so many media players are still not compatible which it renders the format moribund.

I really loved the video quality... used it all the time for impromptu embarassing vids at family events. Looked great when played back on a large screen TV.

Digitec has now changed the delivery date to mid November and lowered the price to 759.- (which is about the same as it costs in Germany). I pre-ordered one now as they won't be cheaper anywhere else. This had better be good - this is definitely the last phone I'm buying for the next year or so (or my wife is going to kill me - and I think this time, she actually means it :-)
I temporarily felt tempted by the HTC HD 2 that's about to be unleashed in Europe, but as I swore to myself to never again buy a Windows Mobile 6.x phone (and 6.5 reportedly isn't much better than 6.1), I decided against it.
EDIT: for those who are worried about the physical keyboard: the phone also has a (reportedly excellent) virtual keyboard that does actually work in landscape-mode as well. As it's pretty thin (unlike the G1), the physical keyboard is nice to have but you don't actually notice it much if you don't use it.

gah, my contract runs out today, so if I want to go get a deal on the iphone it has to be tonight.
Digitec are listing a b0lx discount with a swisscom subscription, the Iphone goes from 1199 to 299 with a mezzo subscription, the Droid goes from 749 to 469, oh goody gum drops.
Could this be it, the holy grail phone, Iphone responsiveness with prostrating yourself before uncle Steve and accepting his control over every aspect of your mobile experience. Window mobile flexibility without those annoying little unresponsive moments peppered with random complete hangs.
But it's still a motorola, I'm having a hard time getting my head round that, every motorola phone I've used has been really really bad.

Absolutely no lagging, iPhone 3Gs speeds with Android flexibility as far as I can tell.
However, you might be right about Motorola - Motorola has recently completely withdrawn from Switzerland. They've closed their offices, they've closed their repair center and they've shut down their Swiss website. Looks like they're gone for good. They're not marketing any of their handsets here anymore. So if you run into trouble, you'll have to deal with digitec. While they might not have the worst customer support of the online retailers, they're still an online retailer.

| | | Re: New phone coming out... the Motorola Droid
I have taken some decent pictures with my N97, and like the keyboard. My biggest issue with this phone, now that I have done the firmware upgrade, is the non-inuitiveness of the UI...that is likely a Symbian issue. Really difficult to get the N97 to set up user profiles when I am in different places. My E60 seemed to connect to Wifi when I was in my home or office, but the N97 starts squawking the moment I leave my home and I can't seem to figure out how to set it correctly. Should NOT be so difficult!
So I am interested in the Android phones. With Google moving into SO many areas, I figure their app store will catch Apple quickly and the number of people developing for the platform will only grow...and I type this from a Mac.
Hoping for the best, but I think giving us incremental upgrades will continue to be a marketing ploy by all of the vendors and carriers...

| | | Re: New phone coming out... the Motorola Droid | Quote: | | | | | Everything I have read so far says even Android 2.0 is still raw and slow...even on the Droid. | | | | | says who? All the reviews I've seen say it's snappy and lag-free? The camera truly seems to suck, though. The keyboard? Well, I don't know - most reviewers complain but I've had the experience that some keyboards just have to grow on you over time. The Blackberry Storm was awful to use in the beginning but after 1-2 weeks things improved dramatically. I guess it's very hard to judge this in a short review. Of course, the keyboard could really be total s**t - but then again, the device also has an on-screen keyboard which reportedly is quite good. After two weeks of reviews I still think that the Milestone is actually it - the device that'll finally replace my iPhone which I have grown to hate (actually, it's Apple I've grown to hate, but the iPhone is the personification of that for me, much more than the Mac computers). And overall, the reviews are quite good - it's the first phone I've seen were reviews didn't turn sour after a week or so...

Xperia X10 looks crap to be honest... id much rather have the HTC HD2, the reviews are universally excellent. Motorola Milestone should be out this week or next form the gossip... personally i'm very torn now and considering waiting a month for HTC's Android-based HTC HD2 equvalent, also rumoured to have a 1ghz snapdragon CPU. | | This user would like to thank Richdog for this useful post: | |

Ill check the HTC HD2 then
Edit: although the XPERIA x10 looks SO CLASS!! the HD2 looks a bit..."roundish/femalish"
