Hi all,

I dropped my iPhone and the screen is cracked - it is still viewable and usable, but i'd like to get it fixed - anyone have any experience of this? Anyone know a repairs shop in Zurich?

yep screens are available from ebay quite cheaply, make sure you get one that comes with the tools to take the thing apart. But by all accounts they are a bitch to take apart.

If you find a good repair shop, please can you reply to this thread with the cost and if they also repair other manufacturers phones screens and what have you?

I hope it wasn't Weejeem at the pub quiz who broke it when we got a point deducted for being "caught in posession".

PS: if you are anything like other iPhone owners here's a tip, don't let your buckets of tears drop onto the broken screen as it may cause internal water damage.

The Apple store in ZH quoted me 300. I bought a screen and tools for about 90. I'll post the link to the store when I'm home tomorrow but I've been living with a cracked screen now for 6 weeks cos the instructions look too scary!

It is scary. Apple don't make it easy to get into these things, and you do run the risk of damaging the phone further. I've taken iPod touches apart before and you really have to be careful and take your time. These things are simply not designed to be serviced - in fact no official service documentation exists for the iPhone outside of Foxconn (the chinese firm that makes the iPhone for Apple)

A quick glance at the service price list from Apple indicates that had you gone with the Apple offer of 300CHF you would have received a new or, more likely, refurbished iPhone in exchange for your damaged one.

My advice to you would be to simply tolerate the cracked screen as long as it still functions OK. The only time I'd attempt it is it I'd lost function of the phone and I had nothing else to lose, and even if it was just a cracked screen then I'd carefully consider a refurb unit for 300CHF.

I'm pretty sure the phone shops here were similar to the UK, where you can trade in your old phone to reduce the price of a new one. Just bring in your phone and charger (and sometimes ask for the manual) and you get 50 - 100 chf off depending on the model. they don't usually care about the condition. I've done it here once at Orange but more recently I've sold my phones on to friends to get a better deal.

Household insurance sometimes cover repair costs if you take out a more expensive policy.

Well, i went to the Swisscom shop i bought it from and they have charged me 260chf to have it fixed by apple. Downside, it will take 10-14 days turnaround and they have given me a total PoS phone in the mean time.

No Tash, no engraved name on it this time!

Quick tip for you all

I just bought a replacment screen for a nintendo DS, supposed to be a direct swap, so I took it all apart, swapped it and for about 2 seconds it worked, unfortunalty this direct swap screen had no insulation on the back of it, just a metal plate, and it shorted against the motherboard and blew the micro fuse, which proved impossible to bypass. So beware if your swapping out screens yourself, check the back has some insulation, and compare it against the one you remove!!
