Mission impossible - BBC iPlayer on PS3?

I witnessed the pure awesomness of iplayer on my PS3 when I tried it out in the UK. Now that I'm back in Switzerland its obviously disabled as it recognises a Swiss IP address.

The question for the network techies is, how can I get it working here using a UK proxy? Is this something that has to be done at the router level, and will using a UK proxy slow down my general surfing, or can I specifiy that the PS3 connects via a UK proxy but my desktop connect using the standard cablecom IP?

Cheers

I would also love to know if this can work here, and also the Msn Video player that has many BBC shows online, that is blocked as well due to Non.Uk IP..

The only way to watch stuff online in the UK is to have an UK Ip address.

and as you have now a Swiss IP.... you need to trick them...

find a way to get a uk proxy working....

Now the IPlayer is just amazing.

Re: Mission impossible - BBC iPlayer on PS3?

If you have a UK IP (which I do....), then you will need to configure the settings within the PS3.

My one is arriving in on Sat (along with the 220 other boxes that also make up our worldly possessions), so I am going to give this a crack.....

I will keep everyone updated on how I get on.

And it'd be interesting to see how to roll back to Swiss settings / have two different settings to choose from. I'm pretty sure when people use new (UK) proxy IP addresses they can get blocked every few months.

This may also help the new Sony PS3 PSP online Videostore to work. Not due outside of UK, France, Germany and Spain till 2010.

You can do a few things using multiple user accounts, I'm not sure if your internet settings are dependent on this though, I think they might be set the same for all users.

easy - you can probably configure your PS3 settings the same way pretty easily - I have one and will work on this this evening.

My own experiences of using a free proxy server in the UK is that they are slow and unreliable. You can get better service from a paid proxy... Assuming of course a PS3 can handle proxy settings , else you may have to VPN to a friend or relatives router in the UK...

Re: Mission impossible - BBC iPlayer on PS3?

Hi,

You will need to setup Identity Cloaker on your computer and connect to the UK through a VPN and not proxy, then enable Internet sharing on the computer. You can either use the built in Internet Sharing program in Windows OR search Google for some more advanced options. If you use the one built in to Windows then in the future your Wii/iPhone/PS3 will connect through your computer, and thus will connect through your VPN connection to the UK.

http://www.gettvabroad.com/category/...-other-devices

and the piece for the PS3 seems to be

Here is a general guide I wrote. For Vista, however, I think you will have to go to the sharing tab instead of the advanced tab when you are browsing the properties of a connection...

1. Get a CAT5 or CAT6 crossover cable. The cable that came with the PS3 is a normal Ethernet cable, therefore it cannot be used for this operation.

2. Make sure you have two sources for network communication. For example, you can have 2 ethernet ports on your computer, or you can have a wireless card and a Ethernet port etc. It helps to draw out a connection blueprint such as this:

DSL Modem > CAT5 cable > Network Card 1 > Computer > Network Card 2 > CAT5 Crossover cable > PS3

3. Connect your computer to the modem and verify that you have an Internet connection. Then, click on Start, go to settings, control panel. Double click on Network Connections, and identify the connection to your modem (Network card 1).

4. Right click on the modem connection, and choose properties. Next, click on the advanced tab (Sharing tab for Vista users), and check the “allow other users to connect…” checkbox. After the checkbox is checked, click on the “Home networking connection” drop down box and select the name of the second network connection. Click OK and exit the properties window.

5. Finally, connect the CAT5 crossover cable from the second network adapter of the computer to the PS3, and voila, your Internet connection is now routed to your PS3. Please be aware that your computer must be on in order for your PS3 to stay online. In the long run, a router may be a much better device to use than your computer, since it consumes only a fraction of the electricity than your computer does.

Have fun

Martin

100% = proxy IP address are a total pain in the arse - I tried using one for a while, adn it lasted about 3 mins - very unreliable....

Yes, it is a freebie, but the frustration outweighs the benefits....

Re: Mission impossible - BBC iPlayer on PS3?

Hi all,

Just using my wife's account as I haven't got around to setting one up for this forum yet as I've been busy starting my new job in Zurich.

I too have a PS3; and your right the iPlayer is a top feature of the latest uk firmware. At home back in the UK we use the iPlayer via the PS3 all the time.

So much so that I wanted to be able to view the iPlayer abroad from any machine (PS3 or laptop) that I just had to find a workaround to the IP issue.

Its true that BBC, ITV, Channel 4 players use GeoLocation technology on IP Addresses (they can tell where you are connecting from by the range that your IP addresses falls in).

I wont go into too much detail here (message me if you want more info) but I've set up a VM (Virtual Machine) at home in the UK which runs some basic proxy server software (which is free to download). All i do when I want to watch iPlayer, C4oD, Sky Player, ITV player etc is set Internet Explorer to use this proxy server.

My laptop in Zurich then appears as a UK IP Address and I can watch any iplayer programs ok, as my internet traffic gets routed via the UK. no issue with bandwidth etc, I can control who has access to it, e.g require username and password.

I use Dynamic DNS to get around the DHCP issue of IP Addresses changing etc. I've set up a simple PAT rule on my router in the UK which would forward any traffic from a port I specify to the Proxy VM. And if the VM accidentally dies i have a method to remote wake it up from here (using WOL) so I don't even have to call anyone in the UK to (press the on button)!! I can remote control it.

In terms of the PS3 you can configure this device to use a proxy server (in network settings) and your laptop / PC would not use the proxy server therefore iPlayer will work via UK proxy on the PS3 and Laptop would be connected as usual via a Swiss ISP.

I personally have written a little vbs script which allows me to set the proxy on /off on my laptop by clicking an icon (dead easy).

Hope this helps let me know if you want any more info....

So I guess the options are:

1) set up a VM as proxy, host in UK - this is what i have done. You have control over it

2) use a free UK proxy server - but these are a bit hit and miss and stop working after a while

3) use a paid proxy server - but I think they charge about £10-15 per month and theres no QoS (guaranteed service levels etc - Quality of Server)

Cheers

Will Hignett

I trust that this is a VPN Provider you are talking about?? If so, you can get them cheaper than the price you have quoted, albeit a shared IP.....

all way too complicated for me unfortunately. A shame that they just dont let people view from abroad.

Re: Mission impossible - BBC iPlayer on PS3?

I have to say that I do like the idea of using a UK paid-for proxy server since I now understand that you can enter proxy settings into the PS3 network prefs. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced service that would work with streamed video content?

Cheers
