Erm, when it was known as epoch it was primarily a touch screen interface, albeit with "real" keyboard, at least with the Psion series 5 and Psion Revo hand held devices.
I do however agree agree with you that it is a dinosaur, but nonetheless a rather elegant one

It's when Nokia got hold of it that the real damage was done. It had the pontential to be an absolutely fantastic mobile operating system, but nokia, as well as Erricson, quite frankly dropped the ball on this one.
As for it going open source, well IMO way too little, way too late.
