Symbian to open source ahead of schedule. Too late to save itself from the Android march?

Rats, I misread this potentially fascinating thread as "Sybian Strikes Back". Boo / useless without pics / etc.

Maemo will take over, hopefully, anyways. So what's the big deal?

Symbian is a dinosaur, it should have never made it to touchscreen.

Maemo is just a stop-gap anyway until the next version of Symbian (it's due to be massively revamped), due out in a year or two I think.

Will older Symbain handsets be able to be reflashed with the newer versions?

Howard Stern redefined radio and television with the show's use of a sybian - now wouldn't it be nice if an OS made you feel that good!

Erm, when it was known as epoch it was primarily a touch screen interface, albeit with "real" keyboard, at least with the Psion series 5 and Psion Revo hand held devices.

I do however agree agree with you that it is a dinosaur, but nonetheless a rather elegant one .

It's when Nokia got hold of it that the real damage was done. It had the pontential to be an absolutely fantastic mobile operating system, but nokia, as well as Erricson, quite frankly dropped the ball on this one.

As for it going open source, well IMO way too little, way too late.
