| | | HTC Evo 4G... new and awesome Android phone just released
Read all abaaat it: http://gizmodo.com/5500343/sprints-h...e-new-terrific | Quote:
It's official: Sprint's first WiMax/ 4G phone is everything we hoped it would be. The HTC Evo combines the "perfect specimen" hardware of the Touch HD2, the Sense-on-Android smoothness of the Legend, and unprecedented download speeds. It's a beast. UPDATED: Hands on! The Evo (rumored as the Supersonic) has the much-loved 4.3-inch screen (480x800 TFT LCD), and 1GHz Snapdragon processor of the of the HTC Touch HD2. But while not even HTC's Sense UI skin could save that phone from its WinMo 6.5 underpinnings, Evo will run on the much sleeker Android 2.1. It'll be one of the first US phones to sport the latest and greatest Android OS, although Kat's already fully endorsed the 2.1 and Sense combo that runs HTC Legend in Europe. It also steps up the camera from 5MP to 8MP. Also: a front-facing camera 1.3MP camera capable of HD video recording. | | | | | Here's hoping it comes to Europe in the not too distant future after the US release! Mind you the new iPhone will be out by then, and it will be interesting to see what that brings to the table. Some exciting stuff coming out this year! | | This user would like to thank Richdog for this useful post:

Yeah, while the iPhone UI is a work of art, the difference is that the hardware stays exactly the same till the next release, whereas with Android the software is a little roper (yet always improving) and yet the hardware advances several times within an OS generation, meaning that you end up with some really awesome kit.

Richdog, you seem to be up on phones etc. I need a new blackberry but I'm waiting for one that can handle proper skype. It seems to be there are new and exciting developments with every phone company except for Blackberry. I need a keypad and quality IMAP support so I'm actually thinking of changing. Do you know why blackberry are so slow these days? What keypad phone would you recommend for good email support?
Thanks |

It's gonna be released in the US in the summer. That means we might get it just before Christmas-if we're lucky.
I'm sure that will take a lot out of the new iPhone's sail. Bet you they were planning to release it as the first 4G phone

Thanks | | | | | Well the problem with BB is that it's hard to improve on what they have... everything works almost to business perfection... albeit at the expense of "thrills and gadgets". I look after the mobility for my company, and while I love BB's as a messaging tool and have one for work, I would never use one as a full-time personal device, i'd be bored to tears within about 5 minutes.
My OS of choice is now Android, I just love it, so until Windows 7 comes along (which also looks very nice and has some great keyboard devices being released) then you are quite limited in your choices (although WM7 has some glaring flaws too, lacking some major features like copy and paste and multi-tasking... ironic since the iPhone was so heavily criticized for this). The problem with Android at the moment is that a lot of the high-end devices are touch-only with no HK (Hardware Keyboard). The only high-end Android device with a HK is the Motorola Milestone which I have, and while I love it dearly, the HK is not the best example of its kind, and coming from a BB would possibly infuriate you... though until you try one for yourself it's always hard to tell.

Well I'll stick with my BB I guess. I don't see the use of having two devices unless they can share everything perfectly - browsing the web on one and using email on the other doesn't seem efficient. Just really want to use skype on the new bold and then I'll get that. | Quote: | | | | | Well the problem with BB is that it's hard to improve on what they have... everything works almost to business perfection... albeit at the expense of "thrills and gadgets". I'm not sure of the reason why it's only restricted to certain countries http://about.skype.com/2009/03/skype...berry_sma.html
Verizon in the US is starting tomorrow allowing Skype on BlackBerries and Android, and it's going over circuit-switched radio channels, instead of packet data, so the connection quality will be excellent http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/16/v...arting-next-m/
...but again, that doesn't help you in CH | | This user would like to thank esto for this useful post:

Yeah I read about the Verizon thing, but still don't understand how it can be locked to one network or the other. And very annoying I cannot use it now, whereas I could with an iPhone. What do BB think they're playing at | Quote:

It calls a local US number and then it's translated into the Skype world. So it's not 100% Skype, as it is with the first link I posted (ie: list of 10 countries). Like I said, I'm not sure how that works exactly. I guess the operators can block/allow it.

The successor Evo3d.. Thanks to the EF, got my first Android - a ZTE SF early last year and had fun tweaking, later that year got an HTC Desire from an EF member.
Daughter wont let go of the Desire now, time to buy myself a big boy android phone. Got my sight set on the SGSII, best price at 478CHF in mediamarkt and was determined to get it. While at mediamarkt I got curios about a chf500plus HTC evo3D, they have a working unit on display. The 3d pics/vids and games impressed me a lot. It matches just about every spec of the sgsII except the 8MP 2dcam, evo has 5mp max at 2d. Earlier I saw Evo3d at InterDiscount at 299 if u have the chf200 bon, was not interested then because they only had a badly made dummy version of it on display at Interdiscount. The real one at Mediamarkt completely amazed me. Decision taken, off I went to the nearest Interdiscount and got my new baby. Awesome phone, loving every bit of it, your own 3d pics and video, watching 3d content from youtube, playing 3d games, huge internal memory, battery life, latest gingerbread and with htc sense UI, I did not have to install another launcher. Its like having bought a serious business phone, a PSP and a Nintendo DS or so the child in me says. I also feel CHF178 richer. So far I have installed all my essentials and fav apps and not even used one third of its internal storage. There is no need to root or tweak as everything works as expected out of the box. This one can sync with my office outlook calendar and contacts By USB Cable. It can tether its data connection by wifi and this one is new - it can reverse-tether to connect to the internet via the connected host PC, useful when in the office and ssshh want internet with your phone but dont want to use your data connection. If theres any kink to its armor its that it rests on the bare and protruding cam lenses when laid flat on its back. Nevertheless IMO the best chf299 spend of my life.

Glad you like your new phone JourneyMan... here's a tip: install Google Calenday Sync and you won't have to use a USB cable again http://support.google.com/calendar/b...n&answer=89955
Same thing for contacts too http://www.webgear.co.nz/Products/GOContactSync.aspx | | This user would like to thank Richdog for this useful post:
