Tesco Internet Phone ending

I have received this mail today, well I have no complaints over the last few years:-

We are writing to let you know that from 27th April 2010, we will no longer be providing Tesco internet phone and Talk Wi-fi services. This is due to a number of factors that impact the service we provide to you, so we have decided to discontinue this offering.

From this date your Tesco internet phone account will be closed and the service will not be available. You will no longer be able to access your online account or be able to make calls using your Tesco internet phone.

This does not affect any other services provided by Tesco Telecoms.

We apologise for any inconvenience and will be happy to assist you with any enquiries you may have.

The Tesco internet phone team

What is funny this is the account I don't use, but I recon that they will pull the plug on all numbers.

What VOIP service do you use, which is stand alsone from the PC and gives you a UK number?

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

Hi,

I got the same mail.
Yes Tesco is pulling the plug.

I am also interested in alternatives.
The £2.99 per month unlimited UK or
the £5.99 per month unlimited "world" (30 countries)
are hard to beat, or so I think/thought.

Would like to know if I can transfer my give UK phone number. Would be a pain to inform all family and friends about new number.

In old mails I read about sipgate.co.uk, but have not checked them out yet.

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

First it was Easyjet to Liverpool, now Tesco ... all the cheap options for life in Switzerland are disappearing. I've given up and now just accept the lot of being Swiss ... pay more than the rest of the world.

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

Will probably go to Vonage, will pick up the adaptor when I go back to the UK at Easter. It is not cheap compared with Tesco, but it will enable the phone to work and for people to call us easily from the UK:

Hi,

Have you considered Skyp? I use it every day to call/talk with folks in many parts of the world and it is free, that is if you have a computer which assume you have.

Regards,

HS

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

Same email here, it's a shame as we've found it really useful.

Does anyone know if there's a way to use an alternative service with the standalone phone/receiver we already have through Tesco?

The Tesco handsets are rebranded USR 9600s. The thread below tells you more about it and how to use with other services.

Hope this helps!

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

I have signed up with VOIPtalk.org to replace the Tesco internet service.

It's a UK company and I get 1000 minutes free (to most countries) per month for £4.99 plus a UK Geographical number.

I tried to take over control of the Siemens Giga device but something went wrong so I have since bought a:
Linksys SPA2102
This is all setup and seems to work well, including receiving voice messages via email.

The advantage of this box is you can connect any normal phone to it, including existing cordless phone (must connect the base station to the box).

This box is a router as well and at first it was a bit confusing on how to set this up, but then found it was actually quite easy if you ignore the router part....

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

There are different solutions for both VOIP and Skype. Some need a PC on, others don't.

As I said, I have a new VOIP:

http://www.voiptalk.org/products/index.html

The solutions tend to fall into the following catagories:

1/ PC Phones/devices (headsets etc) that connect to your PC via USB and need software installed and running on your PC.

2/ Phone adaptors, that connect to your router/hub/switch and allow you to connect a normal phone or cordless base station to.

3/ VOIP/Skype phones.

There are advanteges and disadvantages for each.

Re: Tesco Internet Phone ending

Found this site which does the configuration for you, but also has lots of links to VOIP providers:
