Had the same problem. Apparently it was a faulty router. Cant help you more though. I just left it at that.

What kind of wireless connection are we talking about, certain types, especially those delivered by the company you may work for has some extra security settings, which means that you have to set it up to be able to see it.
Could of course also be a malfunction in the router, try if possible to test it with another laptop, and with a cable to assess where the fault lies.

Perhaps the router has been set for Long Preamble, and the lappy on short preamble i.e. a mismatch ??

We had a similar problem recently. When we tried to connect our new laptop to wireless for the 1st time, it detected all available signals (=our neighbours') except our own! Our 2 other computers were connected and working fine at the time. In the end we rang Swisscom's helpline and they sorted it out. Apparently the problem had something to do with 1 of the router's chanel being fully occupied with our other computers. The Swisscom guy manually set the new laptop up to find a different chanel and all was well. Try the helpline, their guys speak English and stay with you untill the problem is solved. Good luck!
ps. Let me know if you need the number

Theres 13 wifi channels in the 802.11g band. Usually laptops/routers will automatically choose the best one, but you can also sometimes manually select the channel to use. Maybe your router switched to a different channel automatically, but your laptop is manually set to the old channel and doesn't see it anymore but only sees other routers transmitting on the old channel? | | This user would like to thank esto for this useful post: | |

Some laptops have on/off buttons that you aren't aware of until you turn it off accidently. It happened to a friend and funnily enough it took the manafacturer 2 hours to find the problem... they didn't think of it either initially.
Good be that. *shrugging*

My laptop got that problem a year ago. I tried everything and at the end, I send it to the manufacturer. It was a defect in it and the replaced the piece for free.

Is there a chance that your router is configured not to broadcast its SSID? Those computers already configured to 'see' the signal would be able to connect, but it wouldn't appear in a list of signals if you just did a search.

Dont say what sort of laptop it is. If it is a new one there may be a small button on it to switch wireless capabilities off, on my dell it is a letter A with a broken circle at the top, like a transmitter tower, along the top right hand side.
The idea is that you can switch it off if you're in a plane; but still use your laptop, it is very easy to switch off by accident.

What happened and suddenly the connection was lost ? Were you online with the new laptop and you powered up the other one that you have and then you lost connection ?
Does your Router has a maximum MAC-Address filter for hacking protection ?
Also the highest frequency channels (example 13) usually are "quiet" and easier for your systems to talk to each other. Can you program your Laptop and router to propagate to channel 13 ?
What did Swisscom told you about ?

Since you said it's an old laptop and the other laptop sees it just fine. is it possible your old laptop has an 802.11a card and the router is broadcasting at 802.11g/n? Also, what's your OS?

A simple solution could be to add the network manually and see if it works. if you are on windows... I think you go to network connections and then where you see the list of networks.. you add a new one. Since you know the SSID and password, this shouldn't be a problem.
