Network connection possible without active phone line?

HI

I want to get an internet connection in lausanne, but I do not have an active phone line, there is a connection socket though.

Is this possible? Does anyone know if Tele2 or Sunrise is better?

Thanks much!

Network connection without a phone line.

I think they'll make you have either a phone line, or cable TV (for the cable modem version) for any sort of broadband.

You might be able to get some sort of Frame Relay or T1 line or something like that. But those cost way more than they're worth for home use. You'd want them for hosting. And, you'd probably have to have some other wiring run out to your residence.

BTW, you might want to add a subject title next time you post. Just so we know it isn't spam :-)

Sadly, you need to pay for such things like the rest of us. Although, if you have a wifi, you may be able to connect to a neighbors connection for free.. (I'd ask first though).

Try http://www.citycable.ch/modules/news/ or Shared Wifi (http://www.fon.com/en/). With FON you are best off to check in your area to see if there is a hotspot.

Otherwise, ask a neighbour and tell them you will pay half for using their connection, then they will be more than happy to help.

Unsecured networks should be your last option out.

Hi.

All DSL over a phone line at the moment is done through Swisscom - up until very recently they legally owned the so called "last mile". The upshot is, if you get a connection using a phone line from anyone, you will have to pay Swisscom for the line - 25.25 I believe for analog. To have DSL from swisscom will cost you more of course. If you opt for DSL from say sunrise, you will then pay for that on a separate bill (but still the 25.25 from Swisscom). There is ongoing legal challenges to this crazy situation. Hopefully the situation will be completely different by the end of next year and the consumer will benefit from real competition .

If you go for a cable option, e.g. Cablecom, then you pay only them and will have 1 x bill.

In all cases, be careful what you choose. I would not recommend a pay as you go type deal, these almost invariably work out more expensive for the consumer than an unlimited usage deal.
