We are relocating to Bern from USA in 2 weeks and would like to get some input into choosing the right internet service + phone.

My requirement is for an internet service with good upload speeds and hence the 10000/1000 option from Cablecom or the new 15000/1000 VDSL offering from Swisscom that is expected to begin July 1st.

My requirement for a phone service is a VOIP phone that will be cost effective and offers unlimited calling to Fixnet.

Upon a detailed review of available options and several discussions in this forum, the choice is between the following:

1. Cablecom internet + Cablecom digital VOIP phone
2. Swisscom VDSL + Swisscom Fixnet

I have been told that Cablecom's customer service is not good especially after you have been signed up as a customer. Also, I am led to believe that there are bandwidth issues with Cablecom.

Swisscom's Fixnet charges seem quite high and their Bluewin VOIP phone requires the Fixnet connection and hence becomes too expensive.

Customer service, reliability and bandwidth are key factors especially since we expect to have language difficulties in the initial few months.

Your inputs will greatly help us make the right choice.

I am an American from Silicon Valley, so my standards are pretty high. I use Cablecom for internet/phone/TV and am happy with it after 18 months. Speed is adequate, phone is fine (i have a Vonage account with a CA number for US calls and use Orange for mobile) and TV is OK. Many English speakers like satellite for TV as it offers more US/English programming.

Regarding customer service, I have had exceptional experiences so far with every call that I have made to them for problems/questions etc. Extremely polite and responsive, so no complaints from me.

While I cannot speak for the other services, I have to say that I am quite pleased with Cablecom. Of course, prices are higher than the rest of Europe, but Cablecom is roughly the same price as other Swiss options.

In short, don't start yet another thread on providers. This has been discussed to such depths that it could provide anyone from any valley with more than enough info on where to search, who to research and to finally make an informed decision.

In the OPs defense, this information is also changing ALL the time. With new offerings from Swisscom being rolled out in July and new stuff from Cablecom out over the past few months...IMO it is a valid question. You can always choose not to look or comment.

One would think though, in an area titled TV/Internet/Telephone that some valuable information exists. That it might be worthwhile reading that before asking such a broad question. There is no point in regurgitating information without knowing how up to date the existing information is.


You can guarantee that in the existing threads, no matter how old, you will find and be able to compile a list of providers which you could then set about using to research the most current offerings.
