Re: BBC Radio 4 - Cablecom

Does anyone know why Cablecom deliver different services (ha!) to different parts of the country? If you can get Radio 4 in Basel, why not in Zurich?

Re: BBC Radio 4 dead on Cablecom and Astra 2

I noticed this too R4 unavailable. I had to go out before I had time to investigate. Are the BBC radio channels back on satellite ?

Wierd, but all BBC radio stations except useless Radio 1 have also stopped working via satellite. They all broadcast via Astra 2 (including Radio1) which makes it even stranger. Am following the link supplied by Pat to try and reactivate.

Re: BBC Radio 4 - Cablecom

I think you just get a different mix of stations in Zurich. In fact you get 45 radio stations compared to Basel's 40.

Zurich does get Radio Rumantsch and Voice of America, etc!

Why was this in this case Feeble? - it was the the BBC that had changed things, not cablecom. There was still a signal being received according to anyone monitoring the feed at cablecom, it was just that the content of the feed had changed - how was anyone at cablecom not to know that the english voices being heard was not radio 4. It was not until we let them know the change of freq. that things were returned to normal.

Either way - happy to have R4 back :-).

It is down to the capacity's of the network involved before cablecom purchased it. eg Basel being a smaller city to deliver channels to had more capacity that that of the spread-out Zurich (tech - the spacing between channels is greater in ZH than in BS, therefore can get more in).

There is a better description on the cablecom site, but cannot find it ATM.

Attention satellite users. Finally managed to retune my satellite and got all the BBC radio programmes back. It can be done but more by luck than by deciphering the destructions.

Attention Cablecom users - follow your heart and dump Cablecom!

I have no idea, but "The Archers" along with hundreds of other radio stations are alive and kicking through the wonders of free satellite.

I pickup up the BBC channels via their website. The Radio One stream is downgraded for broadcast outside the UK, though I believe there are ways around it.

I haven't seen it on the Cablecom service,

For Luzern the cablecom web page shows no Radio 4, but the BBCWS is on 106.0 FM along with the only other English radio at 107.25:

41 Voice of America 107.25VHF Band IIUKW
42 BBC World Service 106.00VHF Band IIUKW

As others have posted - get a dish or use the online stream or (the normally better sound quality) "Listern Again" function on the BBC radio website.

Or even cheaper get a Griffin Rocket

same principle as an itrip but plugs into your computer, you can then broadcast internet radio to any radio in your house via an empty FM frequency, I've had one for some time now and its good to listen to five live on the bedside clock radio.

Nick.
Cheers for the link. This device looks really cool!.. I was just looking at the reviews and they don't look so good. Is it really only working well 6ft from the wireless router?

two reviews and the negative one countered by a Mrs C. Simpson who has no problems?

Suck it and see is my advice.

Well the idea is to transmit from your computer via a usb outlet. It transmits well over 6ft, I get a good signal up to 10 metres.
Distance and quality very much depends on what frequency you transmit on

Re: BBC Radio 4 - Cablecom

Has anyone noticed that BBC World Service has disappeared from Cablecom analogue radio? It is replaced by World Radio Switzerland, IMHO an inferior service.

Cablecom has been steadily moving stuff to its digital network. First various German TV channels were taken off analogue TV, then BBC Prime disappeared now BBC World Service. Most of this happens without warning. The Cabelcom website as of yesterday listed BBC World Service on cable frequency 100.25, but that was already taken by WRS. Now WRS is moving to a new frequency

We quit Cablecom a couple of years ago and moved to Bluewin TV (now Swisscom TV). We have been totally satisfied with the service, especially technical support that stays on the phone until a problem is fixed. Cablecom would have trouble arranging a beer party at the brewery! Their technical resources are spread very thin, their service has frequent black-outs and I hope few people fall for the new sales pitch with bundles of telephone, internet, TV, etc. Cablecom "won" first prize a couple of years in Beobachter!

Re: BBC Radio 4 - Cablecom

We are analogue Cablecom and frustrated by losing BBC World Service.

Their reply:

At the beginning of November, the Federal Office of Communication (BAKOM), told cablecom that public service broadcaster World Radio Switzerland (WRS) would have to be aired on the analogue cable network. WRS is the English language radio station for Switzerland’s international audience. It is operated by the SRG SSR idée suisse in cooperation with the BBC. Since 2 December 2009, cablecom will now be transmitting WRS instead of BBC World Radio on the analogue cable network throughout the whole of Switzerland.
Because there is a lack of network capacity for broadcasting an additional analogue radio channel in Switzerland, the new World Radio Switzerland (WRS) will be aired instead of the BBC World Radio news channel. WRS collaborates with BBC World Radio on international news programmes. As a result, it will still be possible to hear BBC World Radio content on WRS.
The decision to broadcast BBC World Radio in digital format only from 2 December 2009 was based on objective criteria. Aspects taken into account included maintaining the current language mix, channel diversification in the analogue service, as well as the market shares of the relevant channels. BBC World Radio can still be received on the digital radio service, together with a variety of BBC radio and television channels.

In other words 'tough'!!

We changed from Bluewin Internet service as they couldn't support faster speeds here (Montreux) - now on 20,000kps and service is OK.
