The call was over in 10 seconds, hardly stringing them along nor a waste of my time!

Re: Computer Support Scam

I have been called twice, and both times, after sending the guy to hell, I blocked the number in my FritzBox and have had no more calls since.

I posted this in a different thread. These guys have been calling me for months. It is most definitely harassment. They don't give up.
Interesting this thread reminds me.... they haven't called since. I had threatened for the second time to call the police (after informing various reps multiple times that I do not own a computer). It must have worked. OH says all you gotta do is inform them that all your calls are recorded and sent to your lawyer. That's an easy way to get blacklisted.

After having many conversations with these people, I don't believe that for a second...
Why not?

While I'm sure some or even all of the scammers you've talked to have been running the scam from their back bedroom, it has been reported in various news outlets that entire companies have been set up to run this support scam. The person doing the calling is just an employee, with no technical knowledge at all; they work their way through a script. It's already been observed that the people making the calls don't appear to be terribly sophisticated.

Re: Computer Support Scam

A change of tack this morning.

I was feeling particularly jovial so wasn't rude.

After discovering they were from Bangalore, I told them there was nothing wrong with my computer.

They said it wasn't my computer but my television that was at fault and that I needed to switch it on.

Having never owned one, I told him that might be a bit tricky.

hah It is also happening here.
In China, people may get a call from the "bank" saying that their credit cards or debit cards have been used by others and asking them to follow the "bank"s instructions to transfer all the money in the account into the "safety police bank account". A lot of people got scammed
Yeah, that was pretty funny- an inevitable result of so many people being conditioned to do exactly what the police tell them without question.

One born every minute, and all that...

Re: Warning: "Virus" phone call scam

I got another call this week.

"Hello Ma'am, there is a problem with your computer."

"Great. Before we begin, I just wanted to let you know all my calls are recorded and being forwarded to my lawyer. Now how can I help you?"

Silence.

Re: Computer Support Scam

Guy called today at lunch, speaking English with a painful American-via-Bangalore accent from the get-go. I have heard of these scams, but never actually been called. You should have seen the smile on my face when he said he was "from Windows". To avoid vulgarity on the forums, let's just say he hung up after 15 seconds.

Re: Computer Support Scam

I feel "normal" now (though far from it )... they finally called me today. It was a +1 (USA) number but the person was clearly not American and the background noise was clearly a bunch of people pushing their scam on others. The background were people all hollering "Hello... Hello".

Another thing I noticed, their line kept fading in and out with digital noises - presumably their capacity had reached the limit a few times during the five minute call - cheapskates

The guy on the line kept assuring me I have a Windows computer at my home. I told him no, it is not possible. I don't have a computer at my home, really! Here in my office, through, is a Windoze machine

Eventually, he faded out in a digital twinge of Rs and Gs and disappeared.

Re: Computer Support Scam

I was rung today too. The first thing that made me doubt it was that they were speaking in English. My computer was bought in CH and runs on the German version of windows, so it seemed weird. They were insistent and as I am not computer savvy, it was all the more plausible, but even so, once people start talking about having remote access, it made even me say thanks but no.

Re: Computer Support Scam

Just got a noisy call from an Indian accented woman via an unknown number. As soon as I heard "from the Microsoft Windows centre..." I hung up without a word.

Asked Orange to remove my number from directory, and used the link at http://tel.search.ch/ to edit my entry, requesting removal.

First heard of this scam a couple of years ago and a bit surprised to hear it still doing the rounds. I guess there are people still being caught out.

Re: Computer Support Scam

They've got wise to all the smart replies because now they get pretty aggressive as soon as you start to question them.

However, now I just answer the phone in German and it's obvious they've not been given a go-to instruction for such an eventuality because their phone manner crashes and they are stuttering and repeating themselves. I've answered 3 or 4 such calls in German and now they seem to have stopped.

Re: Computer Support Scam

THANKS ONE AND ALL!!! Without this info I might've fallen into the trap. It just happened 5 mins ago to me.

A call from an Indian/Pakistani sounding geazer, ...we've detected a problem with your computer that has downloaded a virus.......

The phone number showing on the telephone is:- 0044 2030 513 739.

Tried the number again to get a name of the company, and BT came on saying the number has been blocked, and that this call may be re-directed to another country!!!

I'm sending the details on to Microsoft

Good Luck and stay alert All

and enjoy the not too hot day

GREG
