4 months suspended for 12 months and 20 grand costs and fine, sounds like a slap on the wrist to me.
On benefits not able to pay can pay 50p a week etc etc

Re: Computer Support Scam

They're doing the rounds again. Got a call this morning, just hung up. Beggar calls back "Why did you hang up on me?".

"Your pushing a well-known scam. You called me, I don't want to talk to you".

He didn't call back after that. Does anyone know if you can configure a Fritz Box to pass number withheld calls straight to the answering machine?
Edit: yes you can.

Re: Computer Support Scam

Yep. They're still coming. This time the callers ' numbers were incomplete - something like 0090 only.

Now I ask if they have children (if not, whether their parents are still alive). Having secured an answer, I ask "What do you tell your children/parents your job is? Lying to innocent people and trying to steal their money?"

This gets them to hang up instantly...

No. I just tried that. When I got to the parents bit, she said she was an orphan!

I replied that being an orphan was hardly an excuse for being a con-artist and she rang off.

Re: Computer Support Scam

Oooh, I just had Rikash the Gentleman Thief call me too. "Pudner company of Microsoft, Saar, we are wanting to help yoooo." He asked me to push a few buttons on my computer and tell him what I could see. I said I could see nothing but could hear thieving slumdogs trying to steal from me. Click.

Re: Computer Support Scam

I tell them I don't have a computer. And then I laugh quietly to myself as they look in their script for how to respond to that.

Re: Computer Support Scam

Oh boy, these guys are really persistent! They continue to call and call, first to my son, who fortunately gave no information, then to me. When I insisted they NEVER phone us again, I was warned all our computers would break within 15 minutes....so I hung up.

Immediately, a different person phoned and gave me all kinds of warnings about malicious viruses, etc. I asked for the exact name of their company, their location and phone number. He answered; " Microsoft Technical department, in UK, but no phone number could he given out..." When I insisted on his name, he replied; JOHN WATSON!!!

Oh boy, JOHN WATSON....right!

They kept calling me to;

They gave up after I gave them a hard time;
- First I told them I didn't use a microsoft product, I only used Apple.
- Then I asked them what country I lived in (they didn't know).
- Then I queried why they were calling in English when I didn't live in an English speaking country.
- Then I told them if they called again I would call the police.

…… unfortunately a friend of mine fell for this scam.

Re: Computer Support Scam

I get them calling everyday or so. I think I ask for it.

I really wound one up last week.

When he called, I said I was the Windows Service Department and was he sitting in front of his computer.
I then started giving him a series of instructions.

He went absolutely ballistic. It was hilarious.

It's like one of those old "Mr Angry" telephone chat lines they used to have but it's not premium rate.

Re: Computer Support Scam

Since setting up my Fritz box to switch numbers directly to the answer machine in the 0013, 0015, 0016 range. I've the heart warming site of seeing them phoning again and again for no benefit and no bother to me. It's a public service really.

Re: Computer Support Scam

The last time I had the scum dogs call, he asks me if I have a Windows computer, and I replied, "No my computer isn't a Windows computer, it's made by Dell". He was sufficiently confused to hang up and leave me in peace.

Next time go for a ZX Spectrum.... or a Commodore 64, if you want to be all fancy.

Re: Computer Support Scam

I finished a call with them now which ended most a most civil way with the Indian woman thanking me for my advice before hanging up.

Poor girl was actually quite embarrassed about what she was doing when I confronted her about it so we ended up talking about alternative career options and how she could get out of the sham job she was in.
There really wasn't much I could do to help but she seemed grateful that someone could understand her point of view - which seemed to be desperation.

Well done, it's easy to forget here in the privileged west how easy we have it. One positive from it all is finding out about the ammyy.com software which has been a godsend for parental tech support.

Well I usually use my " set up for scam" PC in such scam cases. They get pretty red faces when they can only find hard porn everywhereThey are probably too busy wanking off
