| | | Does cablecom throttle P2P aplications?
as per the title just wondering if cablecom limits P2P applications? I ask as max i can get is 1mb/s but via a normal download i easily get 2mb/s.
Its nothing to do with the number of seeds BTW as its a super fast site.

No, in 2.5 years, I have found that it does not throttle P2P apps.

i have the fibre 20 service. | | | | | I was getting 1.2 MBs on the Fibrepower 100, which was around twice as fast as my speeds on the previous Fibrepower 50, so I don't think they are throttling. If you are using Bittorrent, have you enabled protocol encryption ? This should offer some defense against traffic shaping by your ISP. Also ensure that you only use encrypted seeds too.
Not too sure what you mean by a super fast site and number of seeds , the site will only provide the tracker information, the rest of the download comes from around the network... If you mean downloading fromn a single site, then it would not be uncommon for the site to offer restricted speeds to single connections. How many users at 100mb/s do you think a server can handle ?

its a private site and private tracker, with a high seeder to leech ratio normal minimum is 100 seeds to 1 leech and all have high transfer speeds - part of the requirement to join.

Down: 2.3 Megs, Up: 225 Kbs = no throttling at all, he says.

You should have a look at your local, firewall etc and see if that's slowing things down. I get around 1.6MB from my 8mb wireless to my 20mb Swisscom connection.

Usenet gives me around 7.5MB/s and that's still a way off of the 12MB/s upper limit i've had before.

Reviving this thread because with the new year it seems that Cablecom is now throttling bandwidth..
I used to keep a steady 12 MB/s (Fiberpower 100) for the whole download duration, whereas now, every 1 or 1.5 Gb the connection is completely choked at 1.8 Kbps for minutes... bot upload and download.
I use connection encryption so I guess they have found some new technique... utorrent is choked wherever speed test gets up to 60 Mbit/s (which is the common result I get from my test server)...
Anyone else experiencing this? Screenshot is for a 13GB download.

If you want to make comparisons, you guys gotta get your units right:
m = milli
M = Mega
Mb = megabit
MB = megabyte (1 byte contains 8 bits)
mb/s = millibits per second (never used in reality)
Mb/s = megabits per second, used for speed
MB/s = megabytes per second, used for volume
1.2MB/s = 9.6 Mb/s (based on 1 byte = 8 bits)
1.2mb/s = 0.0012 Mb/s
20MB/s = 160 Mb/s
> 1.2mb/s max on the 100 connection isnt very good, i wouldnt be happy with that.
Neither would I. 1.2 millibits per second = 0.0012 Mb/s, very slow.
> I was getting 1.2MBs on the Fibrepower 100
That equates to 9.6 megabits per second
> My mate thoroughly spanks the 20MB/s connection on some invitation only sites
20MB/s = 160 megabits per second. No provider offers that speed that I know of!!

This is my 25,000Kbit/s Cablecom service (and it's always like this):

with both the above the CC digital phone was in use...

Dont forget, those speed tests are done using local servers dedicated to this kind of service. The value will almost always indicate your speed over a short distance with minimal routing.
The internet still has a lot of bottlenecks at the moment from time taken for DNS servers to respond, to backhaul services being over capacity and therefore throttled. The speed tests are almost never a true reflection of the speeds you will get on the internet.
Cheaper ISPs use cheaper and overloaded backhaul providers meaning that while your speeds locally are fine, they suck over larger distances. There is a good reason expensive Internet provider charge more - they dont just charge more for fun.
In addition, many ISPs will cache content. What this means is that stuff that is looked up a lot will be copied and stored locally so that the next user doesnt have to fetch it across the distance of the original source. Importantly to this thread here, P2P content is not really cached. So the speeds you get are totally dependant on your ISP's backhaul service (especially trans atlantic and asian links). Keep that in mind when choosing your ISP. There is a good chance you will get better P2P speeds with more expensive providers.

I find Usenet is much faster and more reliable than P2P. It always maxes out my connection.

Excuse me for jumping on the bandwagon. But what preferences do you use?
If I remember correctly my utorrent client had a global maximum number of connections of 900 which frankly destroyed my internet connection very often.
How high can you go with the settings?
I use UPC/Cablecom Fiber Power Internet 25 with 25Mbit down and 2.5Mbit up.
I set it now to the following settings: | |
