So that narrows it down to 40,000 or so!
I think you missed a zero or maybe two there.

A lot of people who have probably never heard of EF don't like 'em either.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

So, I get a form from billAG in the mail whether I have a TV or a radio.

I check that I do not own one and now I get a bill from Billag that I should pay up

How does one go about rectifying this?

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Never saw an answer to the question "Does anyone know of any actual Billag prosecutions?"

When I lived in Germany, the "TV Tax people" had vans with little antennae sticking out all over them. They would drive around the neighborhoods in evening and could pinpoint homes with a TV turned on. Eventually, the bill would arrive in the mail.

Though it probably would've been easier simply to peek through the windows for flickering lights at addresses that hadn't paid up...

You have a computer and an internet connection in your home? Billag knows you can watch TV and listen to radio over the Internet which means they want you to pay them.

Which would mean the only purpose of the form was to find out my name (the form was addressed to the resident of my apartment, no name).

I will still get someone to call the infoline, maybe there is just a misunderstanding here.

ps : I do have an internet connection.

I doubt it. I've lived in Germany for a couple of years and never paid the GEZ tax (German billag - Gebühreneinzugszentrale). The GEZ people tried to pay me a visit a couple of time but all attempts were unsuccessful, because they were not allowed to enter my home, we practically had no confirmed contact. I received a letter every two month, asking me to declare any TV / Radio (urging letter, warning, second warning). After three letters they started it all over again: another visit attempt followed by letter, warning and second warning, an so on. I got used to it, after one year, the letters landed directly into the bin. No van, no antenna. Btw, at that time I heard such a van& antenna legend about UK...

Read the following faqs page from Billag (in German): http://www.billag.ch/web/de/fragen_u...eraet_mfg.html

The same page translated via Google: http://translate.google.ch/translate...n&hl=&ie=UTF-8

Essentially, I should have never replied to their letter

These vans are not for tv tax. They are for Google Streetview

Hahaha... nice try, but I lived in Germany when Google was still counting daily visits in the single digits...

And joking aside, my German was quite good while I lived there: they were DEFINITELY for TV tax.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

well regarding these "vans" I doubt they're very efficient. They work by detected the Local Oscillator which is a component in your TV which down converts from UHF to IF. This is the same whether you're watching cable, sat, or regular TV. However it's impossible if you live in a very built up area. They normally just use a paper trail but I'm not sure of the privacy laws here re Swisscom's client database etc. I doubt there's automatic sharing going on with the CH.

I agree. It's very much a hit and miss approach, probably gleaning cues from publically available information (such as phone books) and comparing this with their own customer database and employing students and other people who are prepared to slave away under poor conditions for poor pay, peddling, begging and bull$hitting at people's doors in a manner that makes the Jehovas Witnesses seem professional and convincing, in the hope of getting rewards for winning extra customers. However, often they are poorly skilled to do so, they haven't been trained etc and have no customer focus or sales drive. The whole system creaks with inefficiency and stupidity and it only works because it's a virtual and over financed monopoly (a branch of Swisscom actually) and backed up by an unjust and outdated law.

In Germany of all places I doubt that anybody would dare to pull that one off.

About 70 years ago there was a bunch of people in power there who spied on people and prosecuted them or deported them for not acting as they should. Today's opinion in Germany is very much that that should never happen again.

You're absolutely right, my apologies... I was being facetious about a touchy subject (in Germany) and should've tacked a smiley face on the end of the sentence to point that out.

Or perhaps we pay a prorated amount based on the quantity of content available in English?

They used to have "TV Detector" vans in the UK, perhaps still do. They were promoted on TV adverts aas being able to catch you, though I've since seen claims on the internets that they were really a sham. Whatever the truth of that, they were a very visible threat.

I am told that this is what they do here. In summer months when every one has windows open, you can listen for them. The sound of a TV versus a hfi is pretty distinctive.
