If you have recently moved into an apartment, subscribed to Cablecom or bought a new TV you can expect a letter from the Billag.

They will contact you, don't worry about it. They also just backdate your payments.

LOL, yes, those arseholes will be round to see me soon too, - now that I have moved. I have no doubt of it and have been waiting for them!

When I first moved to Switzerland they turned up on the door-step and I had to think quickly but they were even quicker with the car radio, alarm clock garbage chat.

It's bad enough that I have to pay for cable in my appartment when I don't have it connected because I don't want a TV. I don't have a car either but I do have an alarm clock which I don't use. I do watch zattoo now and again on the laptop.

Is there any way I can get out of this? I figure not. I'm gonna sell my flat-screen Toshiba TV on ricardo before they turn up unless anyone here wants it.

You only are obligued to pay the radio fee if there's a stream radio program on the computer.
This raises the question of what computers nowadays come without a stream radio program already installed. For example, on a new Apple* would you need to delete iTunes to comply with this? I believe alternatives to iTunes are available; if there is one which does the CD stuff but has no radio support, this could be a viable alternative.

* substitute equivalents for Windows or Linux as appropriate.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

i do not have a tv or radio. Do i still need to pay for cable network fee from the landlord. and if i pay this does that automatically mean i have to pay billag?

also has anyone fought a billag bill and won?
how much does it cost to block the cable connection?

Just read today in the newspaper that they are thinking to change this and deducte the license fees directly from your income (as tax I guess)

If they deduct this as a tax, then I hope they drop the fees.

I am sure they will have more people paying doing it this way so should be able to afford to drop the fees.

Anyone know what this money is actually used for? (Or did I miss this earlier in the discussion.

It's a bit of a cheek to charge jsut for the fact that you can access music or TV over the internet or by any other means.

At least in the UK, the license is to receive BBC channels.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Wasn't there some cases of people being able to pickup radio stations in there head from tooth fillings. Do you think they had to pay tooooooooo

According to 20Min, there are more Mobile phones in Switzerland than residences. So if they tax the individuals rather than a payment per home, then they will rake the cash in.

Unlikely, as 90% of Swiss households already pay the radio fee, and 95% for TV. In fact the fees were recently increased.

Most of it (ca. 1 billion/year) is for the public radio and TV stations of SRG SSR, some crumbs for the competing private radio stations. The money goes overproportionally to the French and Italian speaking parts of the country. I think I've written more about it somewhere on EF...

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

No, he didn`t look at the computer. He did make me sign a form that he had written interent on beside radio. Should I expect a bill in the mail. Is there any way out of it? I`ve never the computer for radio.
Thanks foryour help!

Did you sign anything? What did you tell him?
Did the Billag employee take a look at computers?
Did he find programs capable of playing stream radio?

You only are obligued to pay the radio fee if there's a stream radio program on the computer.

And soon perhaps you have to pay the tv fee for your internet and mobile phone TV stream:

A copy of the form would be helpful... If you only stated that you have internet access, that doesn't make you liable and shouldn't be of interest to the Billag employee. Maybe they collect this information to prepare for future legislation changes, but I doubt it.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Everybody, please! It is impossible to escape paying the Billag fees. Unless you live in an Alpine cave.

The Billag inspectors go from door-to-door and quiz any resident not on their rolls. No TV? No radio? You probably have a car with radio, or clock-radio, or internet connectivity, or a mobile phone, etc.

It seems it is an old swiss habit to issue bills out of nothing. It happened to me, too. A few month ago I ordered a "free" catalog online (conrad I think). In the mail I got additionally a bill. Of course, I didn't pay it.

I understand that it is enough to have a computer connected to the internet through ADSL or cable network and specific software (such as Mediaplayer, Realplayer) and you automatically have to pay radio fee. The fact that you never used the computer to listen to the radio is irrelevant.

When they came, did they ask you when you purchased the computer? If it was 8 months ago, then they billed you for the whole period.

Probably the time that has passed since you've moved to your present appartment/house?

First you have to determine if they charge you for television, radio or both. I assume radio only, but better check with this table.

Then you can try to deregister accordingly. I don't know if it's easy, but it's certainly not impossible: My household once deregistered the TV for a year, we didn't seal the TV connection, just moved the TV to the attic, and had no Billag employee visit either as far as I remember.

Assuming you pay the radio tax, you can use this form to deregister. You have to write that you have deleted all programs and browser plugins capable of recieving streamradio from your computer. If you told them that you have a car radio, that will be a bit trickier except if you happen to recently have sold that car...

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

I rented a furnished with TV and radio. I also have ADSL connection in my room (for this I pay 40 CHF to the house owner). TV and radio is not mine, do I still need to pay the tax ?

User pays Billag fee. Not the owner. Unless you stay in a hotel. Then the owner would have a commercial license.
