Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Hubby has just discovered that his flat in ZH counts as a secondary residence and he needs to pay Billag for radio. He's been using the flat for 8 years! I've been paying taxes on our main flat forever.
Can we declare it like we just moved there or do we need to pay back taxes for 8 years? has anyone seen a case like that?

letter from billag to confirm registration?

After few months/years I registered with billag for radio reception since I rented a flat of my own. I have been living in various places before, mostly flat sharing but also hotels/serviced apartments.

In my flat I connected to internet so I registered it and already payed the yearly bill. Recently I received a letter from billag, a kind of form to fill in whether I pay billag or not, my billag number and my personal details including my former address. What are they up to with the letter?

In fact I don't mind paying the kind of social contribution towards something I use but in the past I did not used it. Well, in the serviced apartment where I lived for 5 months there was the TV in the room but I did not used it so I considered it fair to not be obliged by billag. If they are chasing after me for that junk TV than they are like Russian KGB. Lesson learned that I would have no worries if I learned about billag when I moved to Switzerland and registered immediately. Maybe I'm over reacting but the letter looks weird and I suspect that they will start to threaten me to pay for the days since I came to Switzerland and possibly try to add a fine if they succeed.

Any experiences with that? Is it normal that they ask again people who voluntarily registered receiving device? Maybe I should throw the letter to the trash and never reply.

They found me recently, damn it. I put a recent date on the form as the "start date", they seem happy to take my money from then, no questioning of the date has occurred.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

Just got a letter from Billag outlining the new rules for businesses.

Seems if I am registered for Billag at home as a private customer then any business equipment I use at home is also covered so long as customers do not visit my home.

If I have any other businesses premises then I must pay the combined Radio & TV annual fee of CHF 597.50 assuming that I have devices that are both Radio and TV capable.
If I have business premises where no devices are permanently installed but I visit them with, for example, my tablet then I suppose I am liable & must pay this new fee?

I have shown the letter to my colleague at work, as I don't understand French beyond just few words, and she clarified that the letter said that if I don't subscribed yet but have eligible devices than I should do it immediately either online or by sending back the attached form. It seems to me that they do not maintain the database well but my colleague said that it's typical that they send their people to visit homes of new subscribers to fish out something - maybe they will find out a TV if you stated only radio or maybe they will get from you that you have been using the public signals at date before you registered so they will back charge you... Well, so for now I put the form to the trash bin but I guess one day I will have to speak with the nice visitors from billag

Unfortunately you have too... I called them and asked and they told me that I have to pay the tax even if I have no TV. As soon as you have access to the internet (even with a smartphone) you have to pay. Its a beautiful country but they got weird rules.

Re: Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

I'm not going to go through 72 pages of comment to see if this point has been made: the landlord of a serviced apartment, or AirBnB or similar, is required to pay Billag at commercial rates. Ex-VAT that is CHF 590 per year. I pay that single charge for a duplex that consists of two flats, one rented by the year and the other by the week. My tenants, short- or long-term, don't pay anything. I pay 442.65 for another free-standing apartment. I had an exchange of letters with Billag over how much to pay, and what the payment covered. If there is any mistake it's not on my part.

They don't just go for new people. I've been living in my present place for over 10 years now and they still occasionally send somebody. Their agents work on a commission basis and get money for every new customer they sign up. The frequency of visits has tailed off somewhat, maybe as they've noticed I've become more and more ept at dealing with them and whereas I used to be on my back foot I now take positive pleasure in wasting their time and embroiling the in absurd discussions so maybe I've been moved into a special category getting only inspectoirs in need of punishment.

You mean, a story on Swissinfo from a year ago said that those eligible to vote in Switzerland would have a chance to have their say in a referendum in June last year.

It's the direction every country is going, or did you think that the move to digital TV, access to the national stations via Internet, BBC Player and so on were all being pushed for the benefit of the people?

I got a letter from Billag two weeks ago looking that I fill out some form online which will determine, no doubt, that I have internet and thus should be paying. I have internet at home, but no TV, no radio and don't stream TV via the net, let alone the Swiss channels.

I had all but resigned myself just paying, because I have Internet, and a friend warned me that such an admission might result in Billag seeking to fine me for having the Internet without paying.

So what should I do? Talk to a lawyer because of these clowns?

Re: Billag

To my understanding, if you own anything than can access internet, receive TV or FM radio signal - you need to pay Billag.
