I'd be willing to pay a very little, especially if it were less than a paid proxy (7 quid or so). BBC is amazing and I'd much rather give my 7 quid a month to them than the Estonian mafia or whoever runs all these proxy sites.

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

I was surveyed by the BBC and said the same thing. It is one of the few free sites that I would consider subsidising on a subscription basis.

I installed ExpatShield a few months back and found that it was causing my laptop to blue-screen while coming out of hibernation. Once I uninstalled ExpatShield everything was fine again.

That said, I installed it on my girlfriend's laptop (with er... without telling my girlfriend about my installation woes) and it works perfectly.

For the record, I'm running Win7 Pro x64; she's running Vista Home x32.

I'm tempted to re-install it on mine.

As regards the pop-ups, she noticed this as well and the way around it - if you're using Chrome or Firefox - is to install Adblock as a browser plug-in.
Although a free piece of software, I would still use a paid proxy -

I as well am using Overplay - bulletproof to date, and no issues - can also watch US and Aussie TV with it (albeit that the Aussie VPN is a little slow, and the AFL site is just painful at times).

I have tried the free option before, but for the sake of saving £7 a month, I am not sure it is really worth it.

I also use Sky Player - piece of cake, not glitches - perfect picture if nowt else is runninj/using b/w.

Have been doing this for over two years now, and do not regret one bit going for the paid option - makes life so much easier.

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

Found this BBC player today. It's not really an iPlayer replacement but has streams for all the main BBC channels if you don't have a TV with BBC channels.

Works a treat

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

Went to use iPlayer last night (with Expat Shield) - was the first time in a while (probably first time since it became internationally available, for subscription).

Having chosen my program and clicked, was then faced with a blank area where the Program "Click to Play" normally appears ...... nothing, zilch - other program choices appearing lower down (so not a totally blank screen), but whatever I clicked to view was followed by a blank area, instead of the play screen.

- Is this because the Beeb have wised up, since they started charging for international subscriptions and blocked VPN usage?

- Has anyone else experienced this with Expat Shield?

- Does it (iPlayer) still work with other VPN's?

- Have I missed a vital piece of info./change to viewing set up, somewhere?

- Can anyone throw any light on the situation?

N.B. ITVPlayer still works using Expat Shield.

My requirement for iPlayer isn't great, so I wont really consider a direct (international) or VPN subscription.

[have to go out now, and will check back this evening - thanks]

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

I started using HidemyIP yesterday to watch tv on the Iplayer. Worked fine. You have to have a fast broadband speed to get it working correctly though.

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

Issue with Expat Shield and I player. Last used this about 5 days ago and OK but now experiencing exactly the same issue as earlier comment : ie cannot get TV shows just screen with all the borders.

Any ideas if this is a temporary blip ?

BBC iplayer

Good morning all, being a big BBC fan, I am trying to figure out how I can watch the BBC iplayer on my computer. It is coming up saying "it is not available in your area". I am no IT wizz kid but I think from the IP address it knows I am outside UK.

Does anyone know how to get this working? I appreciate any advice on this.

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

You need to read the post immediately before yours and download expat shield. I believe this only works on PC and not on Mac though.

There is a website called 'zattoo.com', it's free and you can watch itv and bbc on there. i signed up for a while and it was a godsend. before we had english channels, i even hooked the laptop up to the tv and watched x factor live from that website. hope some of you guys will find it useful as well

expatshield didn't work for me but zattoo.com works!

Thank you so much falloutchik!

I would sign up for a VPN - yes, you have to pay, but the amount of times that I have used it is worth it.

Trouble free, and less hassle of getting a freebie IP address. Costs me £6.50 a month and this has been factored into the household budget, so it is completely affordable.

Re: BBC iPlayer works!

For 9 chf a month I can now watch BBC1,BBC2, ITV1 and ITV2 on any PC or mobile and can also watch replays for up to 1 or 2 weeks. You can also pay a bit extra and be able to save up to 20 hours (not very much these days) to view later.
I'm sure Sunrise and Swisscom do it too.
