I am in the same boat Brownie. I am married to a Swiss and have also the 1 year renewable, but they told me after 3 years it could become permanent without renewing. I feel cheated also!
I feel cheated too.. Most of all, as my B-Permit is always due for renewal during school summer vacation - I feel locked-up in Swizerland and I can not even go home (at the least and Schengen visa application is not possible without at least a more-than-a-month-valid B-Permit) to visit my old mom / relatives since I need to have this Permit to be allowed back in!

It is really so terrible but I doubt that (as it is) it would get permanent after 3 years (of being married to a Swiss) unless you have been previously here for 2 years (before getting married).
