Thanks for all your help. It looks like you are confirming what I had suspected. I had also heard a lot about Grenzgänger and thought it was a common thing.

My potential employer's HR department has told me that as a British national I may not live in Germany and work in Switzerland, but I cannot find anything on the internet that explains this statement.
Both the British consulate in Germany and Switzerland also seemed to think there is no reason why not.

If anyone does think of a reason why not, please let us know.

I think I have enough to comfortably ask the employer to clarify why they say this.
