In German speaking countries, a CV used to be a long fully handwritten account of your whole school and work life with details and justification. This is nowadays getting replaced by american style CVs that are not written in full sentenses and always printed. Short CV in German is the latter one.
Making it strictly one A4 page only is up to you. I have the feeling it has become normal to cut down to only relevent info for a tailor made CV to each application.
thank you, america
I believe not such a long time ago on german cvs you had to include info on which primary school you went to and the name and job of of your parents

I think the "american style" can still be a "long CV" which is good to have if you are requested to send "vollständige bewerbungsunterlagen"/ complete application documents (?)
it is just written in a "bullet point" style, which makes it more readable at a glance
