Buy a weber gas grill. It will last you 20 years. I recommend the Spirit model.

You can buy a small smoker box where you put in pre-soaked wood chips to get the smoke flavor, although it works best on roasts or turkeys that are in there for several hours. Just place on top of grill in the corner.

Coal is supposed to be superior in the eyes of purists, but the hassle, the wait, the smoke, the clean-up, in the end makes gas a superior solution.
