I was thinking more of him being gone for however long with no idea on when he's coming back, if ever. Not sure the landlord would be happy to keep renting in that situation.

Also as miniMia points out, you're going to be paying Australian and Swiss taxes with no way to benefit from any tax treaties as far as I can see, so double taxation on whatever you're earning. But then again, how you would manage to pay Swiss tax if you don't have a C permit is another question. As a B permit holder presumably you pay at source, which you won't do once you move. If you get the C, then you'd have to fill in a Swiss tax form of course.
