Re: Holiday to USA - problem with ESTA

ESTA came in after 9/11. Hubby's problem was the biometric passports only rule came in on the 26th October 2006 and he obviously didn't have one of that type. I think he was due to fly out on the 28th or 29th so we rushed to the embassy, then had to dash down the road to a photo booth as the photos we brought with us weren't recent enough, back to the embassy to fill in the form. That had to be sent to the UK for approval and we had to wait until it came back before they could issue the new passport. We were coming up on 5.30pm by that time and getting worried that the UK end wouldn't contact the embassy in time for the passport to be issued. Made it by the skin of our teeth, but the trip went well in the end.

Mind you, he still had the occasional problem as the systems can't seem to deal with the fact that a British national with a British passport doesn't always live in Britain. Having a Swiss address makes the whole process throw a wobbly. Might have improved by now as I don't think he's been back to the States since 2008/9.
