I can't speak unfortunately for Australian citizens but I do know that Indian citizens could apply for an attestation document from the Indian consulate which certifies the date of birth as recorded in the Indian passport. This in turn is sufficient for some Swiss authorities to accept in lieu of a Birth Certificate. Hope this helps.
