The scam is very simple actually, if it involves Paypal that is.
Paypal is very pro-buyer and if the buyer challenges anything in the transaction its very likely that they will get a refund with little hassle, leaving the seller hanging dry without payment and with the item shipped.
My father was selling a crane with latticed boom (up to 75m - 95 ton capacity - nice big machine) in a local Greek site and he got an email from someone in Nigeria that he's interested in the crane and that he would like to do a 5 figure transaction over Paypal and that he somehow would arrange to take the machine to Africa
